It is being reported that Wrexham AFC have reached an agreement with Angers SCO to acquire left-back Jacques Ekomié, a Gabon international, outbidding West Ham United and Hamburg.
As reported by Get French Football News, an agreement between the two clubs was reached on Tuesday after talks regarding the 23-year-old. Also, according to The72, Wrexham have had an offer of nearly £8 million accepted.
Angers value Ekomié at about €10 million, and earlier this summer turned down an initial offer from Wrexham, thought to be worth roughly £4.3 million; the Red Dragons have now increased the proposal and look set to seal the signing.
Ekomié had previously drawn interest from West Ham, and the Bundesliga side Hamburg had also regarded him as a target at the beginning of the summer. It was said that Hamburg were not willing to match Wrexham's financial offer, a clear sign of how dominant British teams are in the transfer market.
Ekomié was born in Libreville and progressed in the Bordeaux academy before achieving promotion to the senior team with the French club. He moved to Angers in a free transfer in the summer of 2024 and has since gained a great deal of experience in French football.
Mainly playing as a left-back, Ekomié is also capable of operating as a wing-back and could offer pace, athleticism and the ability to carry the ball on the left side of Wrexham's setup. The idea is that his profile matches well with Danny Imray, who operates on the right-hand side, creating very forward-thinking wing play in attack.
Although Liberato Cacace is still a natural choice for the left side, he has suffered from injuries since joining Wrexham, and last season midfielder George Thomason had to spend a lot of time playing as a wing-back. The arrival of Ekomié would give Parkinson another option.
This potential transfer also aligns with Wrexham's broader recruitment strategy, as Ekomié is young, at just 23 years old, and could improve and increase in value. Although he already has experience playing at the highest level and internationally, these are all seen as highly positive aspects in his signing.
A deal has not yet been officially announced by either club, and the remaining contractual details will need to be completed. However, with Wrexham’s improved bid being accepted and an agreement reportedly in place, Ekomié now appears set to become the latest major addition to Parkinson’s squad as they push for Premier League football.
