Former Wrexham and Manchester United defender Lee Roche went from a Champions League appearance to a career in plumbing and construction after leaving full-time football.
Former Wrexham AFC defender Lee Roche once started a Champions League match for Manchester United. Today, he works in plumbing and construction, a career change that followed the end of his time in full-time football at 27.
Roche came through United’s ranks and made a handful of first-team appearances under Sir Alex Ferguson. The most prominent came against Deportivo La Coruña in March 2003, when he started a Champions League fixture alongside established United players. Yet first-team opportunities remained limited, and he left Old Trafford for Burnley later that year.
Wrexham supporters had already seen plenty of the defender. Roche spent the 2000–01 season on loan at the club, becoming a regular before returning to Manchester United. After two years with Burnley, he signed for Wrexham again in 2005 and stayed for another two seasons. His playing career later continued with Droylsden outside the Football League.
According to a career transition case study published by the Professional Footballers’ Association, Roche turned to the organisation for support when his full-time football career ended in 2007. He initially trained as a cavity wall technician and later gained coaching qualifications, including a UEFA B licence. That led to a role with Bury’s academy.
Roche subsequently trained as a plumber. With PFA support, he began a Level 2 NVQ programme in November 2018, qualified in February 2019 and secured a full-time job in the trade. He also established a business specialising in cavity wall insulation extraction.
His story reminds us how quickly a football career can change. In the PFA case study, Roche described leaving full-time football without a backup plan as stressful. Retraining gave him a route into stable work, while his coaching qualifications let him stay connected to the game.
Roche’s journey reaches well beyond his two spells at the club. He experienced Champions League football with Manchester United and regular senior matches in North Wales, then had to build a different future when his playing prospects narrowed. His move into the trades is an example of a former player finding a new profession after football.
