Wrexham AFC defender Jacques Ekomié continues to attract attention in his native Gabon after an encouraging start to his Championship career, with the 23-year-old establishing himself as a key member of Phil Parkinson’s squad.

The Gabon international joined Wrexham from French Ligue 1 side Angers during the summer transfer window, signing a four-year contract as the club strengthened its defensive options.

National newspaper L’Union highlighted his attacking contribution during the opening weeks of the season.

More recently, the Gabonese Press Agency reported on Ekomié’s involvement in Wrexham’s 4-1 victory over Preston North End on Saturday. Ekomié arrived in North Wales following two seasons of regular first-team football with Angers.

The left-sided defender had previously developed through Bordeaux’s youth system before establishing himself in France’s top division. His move to Wrexham represented a new challenge, with the Championship offering a demanding schedule and a different style of football.

However, Ekomié made an impressive attacking contribution during his opening appearances. The defender scored twice in his first four matches for Wrexham, an unexpected return considering his previous goalscoring record. Ekomié had failed to score in 56 Ligue 1 appearances across two seasons, making his early Championship goals particularly significant.

One of those goals came during Wrexham’s 1-1 draw against Burnley on September 8, helping Parkinson’s side secure a point at the Racecourse Ground. Ekomié’s performances have attracted attention beyond North Wales because of his involvement with the Gabon national team.

The international coverage reflects interest in Ekomié’s development after he left French football. Ekomié’s arrival gave Parkinson another option at left-back, especially with Liberato Cacace dealing with injury problems. His ability to contribute defensively while supporting the attack gives Wrexham more flexibility in wide areas. The defender has also gained valuable experience representing Gabon, alongside his domestic development.

Wrexham’s immediate focus remains Saturday’s Championship trip to Blackburn Rovers, where Parkinson’s side will attempt to build on their victory against Preston.

Ekomié will hope to maintain his place as Wrexham look to improve their league position.

Jacques Ekomié began his football career with Mérignac before joining Bordeaux's academy in 2021. He made his professional debut in January 2022 and went on to establish himself in Ligue 2. The Gabon international joined Angers in July 2024 and made 55 appearances across all competitions, including 50 in Ligue 1. In August 2026, Ekomié signed a four-year contract with Wrexham for a reported fee exceeding €8 million, beginning his career in English football.
