Kieffer Moore delivered an influential display as Wrexham defeated Southampton 2-1 at the STōK Cae Ras, scoring the opener and leading Phil Parkinson’s team to a response after a difficult week.
Kieffer Moore proved his importance to Wrexham AFC with a strong showing in Wrexham’s 2-1 Championship win against Southampton.
The Wales international did much more than just score Wrexham’s first goal. Moore led the attack, battled with Southampton’s defenders, and helped out in his own penalty area as Phil Parkinson’s team earned their first home win of the season.
Wrexham came into the match looking to bounce back after a tough 6-0 loss to West Ham United. That defeat put Parkinson and his players under pressure, but the fans at the STōK Cae Ras showed their support before the game started. Wrexham had to deal with a lot of pressure from Southampton in the first half. The visitors kept the ball and created the best early chances, but Wrexham goalkeeper Daniel Peretz stopped Callum O’Hare just before the first goal.
In the 35th minute, Moore pounced on Southampton’s missed chances. Ben Whiteman sent in a dangerous corner to the back post, and the 6ft 5in striker jumped above the defenders to head the ball past Peretz.
Moore’s strength in the air and his knack for making a difference even when Wrexham aren’t on top. It gave Parkinson’s team a valuable halftime lead, despite Southampton’s control.
Moore kept making a difference all over the pitch. His height and strength helped Wrexham ease pressure by playing the ball forward, and he also dropped back to help defend against Southampton’s set-pieces and crosses.
The striker came off after 72 minutes, but his determination had already set the fighting spirit Wrexham needed.
Just when it looked like the match would end in a draw, Wrexham scored a dramatic winner in the 89th minute. Jacques Ekomié sent a dangerous low cross into the Southampton box, and defender Keven Schlotterbeck accidentally put the ball into his own net.
The late goal sparked big celebrations and gave Parkinson a much-needed win after a tough week at Wrexham. It was also a strong answer to anyone who doubted the manager and his players after the heavy loss to West Ham.
Moore’s performance showed why he is still so important to Wrexham. His value goes beyond just scoring goals. He gives the team a way out when they’re under pressure, battles opposing defenders, creates space for teammates, and helps defend set pieces.
Wrexham didn’t play their best, and Southampton will probably think they deserved more from the game. Still, Parkinson’s team and in particular Moore showed the resilience and team spirit that have driven the club’s impressive climb up the leagues.
