It has been a busy summer so far at Ajax, and the Amsterdammers are expected to still be very active in the transfer market in the coming three weeks.

Ajax have already signed Daley Blind, Caio Henrique, Marcos Leonardo, Tolu Arokodare, Julian Brandt and Marc ter Stegen.

While Ajax want to keep Mika Godts, his departure would provide the club with serious financial power to strengthen the squad.

Godts has agreed a long-term contract with Paris Saint-Germain, but the Parisians are yet to reach an agreement with Ajax over a transfer fee. Their initial offer of €45 million was rejected by Ajax, but the expectation is that they will return with a new offer of around €55 million. Whether that will be enough remains to be seen, as the noises around Ajax suggest they want €60 million, potentially more.

Speaking on the Kick-Off podcast, Mike Verweij has reported that Ajax could sign another five players if Godts does indeed depart for Paris Saint-Germain.

"Michel might want to bring in two players if Godts leaves. Players with depth on the left and right wings. Berghuis should naturally be worried then," Verweij explained.

"He is currently playing right winger, and he doesn't fit that profile. He is a player who comes to the ball and lacks that depth. Cruyff wants players who score goals and provide depth on the flanks.

"I have already indicated this earlier in the podcast, and this is also related to the departure of several players, that another five players are really going to be added.

"A left winger, a right winger, a number six, and a left-back will be coming.

"Torrents is frequently mentioned for that position; it is quite serious. If Itakura and Sutalo were to leave, a right-footed central defender would also arrive."

There is an argument to be made that Ajax do not need a new centre-back, even if Ko Itakura and Josip Sutalo both leave. Sutalo is said to be attracting interest from the Premier League and Benfica, and various reports claim Ajax want €15 million plus bonuses for the Croatian defender.

Ajax have Daley Blind and Youri Baas, who are both established first-team players, as well as Aaron Bouwman and Dies Janse.

Bouwman made his Ajax debut last season, and while he does have flaws in his game, he is capable of starting games in the Eredivisie. The same goes for Janse. While he has only played a handful of times for Ajax's first team, he enjoyed an excellent loan spell at FC Groningen last season.

In addition to those four players, Ajax also still have Ahmetcan Kaplan. NEC Nijmegen wanted to sign him permanently following his loan spell last season, but that deal did not go through.

If Ajax do sign a centre-back, it should be a right-footer, but a new signing in that position could drastically reduce Janse's minutes, and potentially Bouwman's too. 

One idea could be to sign a right-back who can also play at centre-back. Ajax have been in the market for a right-back who can become a third centre-back in possession. Signing a player who can play both positions would provide Michel with the profile of right-back he wants, as well as an extra centre-back option if ever needed.
