Ajax fear that Kasper Dolberg's injury could be serious.
Ajax have had a solid start to the 2026/27 season, picking up 14 points from their first seven Eredivisie games and also qualifying for the UEFA Conference League.
One of the biggest reasons for Ajax's success so far this season has been their attacking play. Michel Sanchez's team scored 22 goals in six UEFA Conference League qualifying games and 21 goals in the Eredivisie so far this season. That averages 3.3 goals per game.
Ajax signed two new strikers in the summer. The first was Marcos Leonardo, who moved to Amsterdam from Al Hilal for just under €20 million. The Brazilian forward was brilliant in Saudi Arabia, but has struggled so far at Ajax. He gets into great goal-scoring positions, but his finishing has been poor so far this season.
The other striker Ajax signed was Tolu Arokodare. The Nigerian striker joined on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Ajax also having the option to sign him permanently next summer. Tolu has been exceptional so far, scoring six goals in nine games.
Ajax signed both Tolu and Leonardo despite already having Kasper Dolberg. The Danish forward struggled for form last season but found form in the three games before the international break.
Ajax fear Dolberg's injury may be serious
Dolberg would have likely gone into the international break full of confidence, having scored twice and registered three assists in his last three appearances.
Unfortunately, though, Dolberg suffered an injury during a training session with the Danish national team and therefore had to withdraw from the squad for their games during this international break.
According to De Telegraaf, the exact extent of Dolberg's injury is currently unknown. However, Ajax fears the injury is serious and believes he could be sidelined for a long time.
Dolberg is still in Denmark, and the injury needs to be examined further, but that is only possible once the fluid has disappeared from the joint. Once that happens, a precise diagnosis can be made.
Dolberg's return to Ajax has been disappointing
Dolberg's first spell at Ajax was exceptional, but his time at the club since returning in the summer of 2025 has not gone to plan. He only scored five goals in 30 appearances last season. It is important to note, though, that Ajax had three different managers last season and most players had poor seasons.
In the first few games of this season, his performances were not particularly convincing, but he has been very good over the last few games and looks to be playing with genuine confidence again.
An injury is never good, but this one will likely be particularly frustrating for Dolberg, given the fact that he finally started to find form after a turbulent 12 months.
