How good can Abdellah Ouazane become?More Videos

After an impressive summer transfer window, Ajax now have sufficient squad depth, and with that comes competition for places.

One area of the pitch where Michel Sanchez has a lot of options is on the left wing.

Oscar Gloukh looked impressive in that position in the games leading into the international break. Oliver Edvarsen can also play there and could perhaps be used in games where Ajax want to maximise attacking transitions. Abdellah Ouazane has also played the majority of his minutes there this season, although he, like Gloukh, can also play more centrally.

Ajax also have Simon Adingra, who may well be the player who occupies the left wing position for Ajax for the majority of the season. The Ivorian winger joined Ajax from Premier League outfit Sunderland on deadline day. It is a season-long loan, with Ajax reportedly having the option to sign him permanently next summer for €16 million.

Michel also has a lot of options for the No. 10 position. Julian Brandt has been exceptional and will likely play most games there, but Ouazane and Gloukh can also play there.

Ouazane opens up on comeptition for places

Ouazane only made one appearance for Ajax's first team last season, but has already played 12 times this season in all competitions and will likely play more as the season goes on.

While most of his appearances have been as a substitute, he has looked very promising and that even helped him earn his debut for Morocco during the international break.

In an interview with ESPN, Ouazane talked about the competition for a place in Michel's starting line-up, both on the left wing and in the No. 10 position.

"It is something new for me," Ouazane said when asked about competition for a place in the starting line-up.

"In the youth academy, I was often used to playing. I see it as something I can learn from. I am young, but good enough is old enough.

"If I think I am better than someone else, the coach will see that too. If I deserve my spot, I will be told so. But right now, I just have to work really hard, keep my mouth shut, and show respect to those who are playing. And I do that.

"When I’m on the bench, it’s not with the feeling that I should have been playing. Sometimes, of course, because everyone wants to play. But sometimes you also have to think about what is better for the match itself."

Ouazane deserves more minutes

Ouazane has looked impressive almost every time he has played this season, and he should be given the opportunity to start more games, whether that be on the left wing or in a more central position.

When Ajax play against a low block, Michel could potentially opt to start Brandt as a no. 8, and Ouazane as a no. 10. Ajax often attacks in a 3-1-6 or 2-1-7 shape, which means the no. 8 is often on the same line as the no. 10 anyway.

Ouazane also gives Michel a very good option on the bench who can come on in the second half and make an impact, but at a certain point, a player as good as Ouazane has to be starting games.

That being said, the fact that Ajax have so much squad depth is only beneficial for the club, as they look to win the Eredivisie and challenge for the UEFA Conference League.
