Abdellah Ouazane has enjoyed a very good start to the 2026/27 season with Ajax.

The 17-year-old made his debut for Ajax last season, but that was his only appearance for the first team.

However, under Michel Sanchez, Ouazane has seen his game time increase significantly. He has come on as a substitute in most games, but has already made 16 appearances in all competitions for Ajax this season, scoring two goals.

Ouazane often played as a no. 10 for Jong Ajax, but Julian Brandt has started for Ajax in that position in the vast majority of games this season.

Ouazane has therefore been used as a left winger. Michel has started Oscar Gloukh in that position in most games this season, but the Spanish coach often brings Ouazane on during games to play on the left. That is what happened against Atalanta, and Ouazane scored a magnificent goal to make it 2-0 in stoppage time.

Ajax urged to open contract talks with Ouazane

In the summer of 2025, Real Madrid came very close to signing Ouazane from Ajax, but the transfer did not go through as the Spanish giants were not satisified with the results of Ouazane's medical.

He therefore stayed at Ajax and signed a three-year contract, which runs until June 2028. Speaking on De Telegraaf's Kick-Off podcast, Mike Verweij opened up about Ouazane's contract situation, with the Moroccan international having less than two years left on his current deal at Ajax.

"He is a player of exceptional caliber," Verweij said.

"However, Ajax will have to sit down with him soon. That will be quite a challenge. He is with Forza, with agents who will undoubtedly demand a lot of money.

"I think Ajax should offer him a very good contract, but knowing Jordi Cruijff, he won't push it to the extreme. That will be quite an interesting game."

"I think he intends to stay, but that requires a good contract in return," Verweij explained.

"I think it is highly advisable to start talking to each other early."

Ajax need to extend Ouazane's contract before the season ends

Ajax need to do everything possible to extend Ouazane's contract before the season ends. If they allow him to go into the final year of his contract, it is quite possible that Ajax may have to let him leave for a reduced fee in the summer.

If a club does try to sign Ouazane, Ajax could try to keep him, but they then risk losing him on a free transfer in 2028 if they fail to reach an agreement with him over a new contract.

Given his talent and the performances he is beginning to produce, several of Europe's top clubs will likely be closely following his progress.

While Ouazane can become one of the best players in the world, he is still only 17 years old and should stay at Ajax for a few more years to develop his game before taking the next big step in his career. He could play a pivotal role in helping Ajax return to the top of Dutch football.
