While the transfer window is closed, clubs are still allowed to sign free agents, and Ajax are working to sign a former Tottenham Hotspur player.
The summer transfer window was busy for Ajax, with Jordi Cruijff making eleven first-team signings in an attempt to close the gap on rivals PSV Eindhoven after finishing 28 points behind Peter Bosz's side last season.
One of Ajax's top priorities was a defensive midfielder. Ajax signed James McConnell on loan from Liverpool in the summer of 2025, but the midfielder failed to make his mark in Amsterdam and returned to the Merseyside club in January. Defensive midfield was therefore a problematic position for Ajax in what was already a turbulent season.
Edson Alvarez was strongly linked to a return to Ajax in the summer, with both the player and the Amsterdammers reportedly having been keen on a reunion. That transfer, however, failed to materialise.
After that, Ajax set their sights on Sofyan Amrabat. The Moroccan midfielder spent last season on loan at La Liga side Real Betis. Following his loan spell in Spain, his contract at Fenerbahçe was terminated, allowing Ajax to sign him on a free transfer.
Ajax keen on Bissouma
While the transfer window is closed, free agents are still available. One of those free agents is Yves Bissouma, and he is reportedly attracting strong interest from Ajax. The Mali international has been available on a free transfer since his contract at Tottenham Hotspur expired in the summer.
According to De Telegraaf, Ajax want to sign Bissouma.
It is unknown how likely the transfer is to happen, with Ajax facing competition from several clubs in Europe's top five leagues.
Bissouma would be a good signing
Bissouma would be a good signing for Ajax, and he would provide them with good squad depth in midfield. The midfielder has some very good attributes in his game and would add a lot of experience to the Ajax squad.
Jorthy Mokio will likely play most of his minutes as a no. 8, and Amrabat is therefore really the only specialist defensive midfielder Ajax have. Given the fact that Ajax will likely have a lengthy European campaign in the UEFA Conference League, an extra option in the no. 6 position would be useful, especially following the departure of Youri Regeer, who joined Werder Bremen on loan.
Bissouma impressed during his time at Ligue 1 club Lille before making the move to the Premier League in 2018, joining Brighton and Hove Albion. After a successful four years on the south coast of England, Bissouma made the move to Tottenham Hotspur.
He spent four seasons in North London making over 100 appearances before leaving in the summer following the expiry of his contract.
