Ajax completed the signing of Marc ter Stegen on loan from Spanish giants FC Barcelona during the summer transfer window.

The German goalkeeper played over 400 times for Barcelona, but was loaned out to Girona last season, where he worked with current Ajax head coach Michel Sanchez. It was a disappointing season for the club as they finished 19th and were consequently relegated to La Liga 2.

Following his return to Barcelona after his loan spell with Girona, Ajax made a move to sign Ter Stegen after identifying the position as an area that needed to be strengthened. Ajax did sign Maarten Paes from FC Dallas in the winter transfer window, but Vítězslav Jaroš left the club and returned to Liverpool following his loan spell in Amsterdam.

Ter Stegen has had a solid start to the season despite one poor performance, which came against PSV Eindhoven in Ajax's 1-3 loss to Peter Bosz's side.

Ter Stegen is a fantastic ball-playing goalkeeper and will play a crucial role in the first phase of build-up in Michel's team. He has also pulled off a couple of impressive saves. He adds experience and real quality to the squad.

Germany manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Marc ter Stegen will start in goal against the Netherlands in Amsterdam.

"Ter Stegen will keep goal in the first match,"  Klopp said.

"A team needs a backbone. If that is stable, you can play freely and take risks. I feel like I have known Marc for ages.

"Manuel Neuer was the best goalkeeper in the world for years, but Marc-André was world-class too. His problem was that he got injured at unfortunate moments, but now he is fit, and he brings the necessary experience with him."

While Ter Stegen will play for Germany at the Johan Cruijff ArenA against the Netherlands, no Dutch Ajax player will feature in that game. Xavi Hernandez has named his first Dutch squad after becoming the head coach of the Dutch national team, and no Ajax player features in the 26-man squad.

There were some rumours that Youri Baas was under consideration, but Xavi has instead opted for Virgil van Dijk, Nathan Ake and Micky van de Ven for the left centre-back position. Jorrel Hato can also play there but will likely be used at left-back.

Aaron Bouwman had also been mentioned as a potential option in central defence, but the injury he suffered against PSV Eindhoven means he is unavailable for selection. Bouwman is only 19 years old, though, and a first call-up will come in due time. He is immensely talented, and while he does have flaws in his game from a defensive point of view, he is brilliant on the ball and has the potential to become one of the best central defenders in Europe in the years to come.

While no current Ajax players are in the Dutch squad, there are several former Ajax players who have been called up by Xavi. Hato, Jurrien Timber, Justin Kluivert, Ryan Gravenberch, Kenneth Taylor, Brian Brobbey and Noa Lang have all been included in the 26-man squad.
