After weeks on the sidelines, Steven Berghuis is now set to return to action.
Steven Berghuis has not played for Ajax since the club's 5-1 win against Willem II at the Johan Cruijff ArenA on 15 September.
The winger has been out with an injury, but prior to that, he had started all of Ajax's games in the Eredivisie, as well as five games during UEFA Conference League qualifying. In those 11 appearances, he registered two goals and five assists.
In Berghuis' absence, Viktor Tsygankov and Davy Klaassen have shared the minutes for Ajax on the right wing.
Tsygankov, who joined Ajax from Girona during the summer transfer window, has had a difficult start to his time in Amsterdam. He has only played 354 minutes for Ajax in all competitions, which is the equivalent of just slightly less than four full games.
With Tsygankov struggling for form, Michel Sanchez opted to use Klaassen on the right wing. Klaassen would often move into midfield when Ajax had the ball to help create an overload in the centre, with right-back Lucas Rosa pushing higher up the pitch to hold the width on that side of the pitch.
Berghuis set to return to action
After missing around six weeks on the sidelines, Berghuis is set to return to Michel's squad against AZ Alkmaar on Saturday night.
According to Ajax Life, Berghuis is fit enough to return to the squad. Daley Blind, who returned to action on Sunday against Sparta Rotterdam after over two months out of action, is also available for selection.
Caio Henrique, Anton Gaaei and Oliver Edvardsen are all close to returning to action, but will not be available against AZ Alkmaar. They are expected to be back next week, Ajax Life reports.
Simon Adingra has only made one appearance for Ajax since joining the club on loan from Sunderland. He signed with an injury but made his debut against NEC Nijmegen. He has been out since and is dealing with the same injury he came to the club with. It is unclear when he will be fit again.
Ajax have missed Berghuis
Ajax have missed Berghuis on the right wing. Ajax need to strengthen that position in January, but for the time being, Berghuis is Michel's best option in that position. Tsygankov is a player with real quality, but he has struggled for form and has not reached the same levels he reached at Girona.
Klaassen has done fairly well on the right flank, but he is a midfielder. Berghuis himself likes to roam into more central areas, but he is at least somewhat capable of holding the width when necessary and dribbling past the full-back. When Ajax have the ball and Klaassen is the right winger, he almost always occupies the same areas as a No.10.
