The details of the deal agreed between Ajax and Barcelona for Jofre Torrents have been revealed.
Before the summer started, Ajax identified the left-back position as an area of the team that needed to be strengthened.
Last season, Lucas Rosa and Owen Wijndal started the majority of games for Ajax in that position. Youri Baas also played a few games in that position, although he mainly played in central defence.
Earlier in the transfer window, Ajax completed the signing of Caio Henrique from AS Monaco, for a fee in the region of €10,5 million.
Ajax have now also completed the signing of 19-year-old left-back Jofre Torrents from Barcelona, and the youngster has signed a contract in Amsterdam to keep him at the club until June 2030.
Details of Torrents' transfer revealed
Ajax had been working to sign Torrents for a number of weeks as Jordi Cruijff looked to negotiate a favourable deal. Reports in the Netherlands claim that Ajax will pay nothing for Torrents initially, but there are bonuses included in the deal.
According to SPORT, Barcelona could receive up to €5.5 million if all bonuses are reached during Torrents' time in Amsterdam. Barcelona also retain a 50% sell-on clause.
In addition to the sell-on clause, Barcelona also have a buy-back clause which is worth €14 million. That clause can be activated from 2028 onwards.
Barcelona also have the right of first refusal, which means Ajax will have to allow Barcelona to match any bid they accept for Torrents.
Does Wijndal have a future at Ajax?
The signings of Torrents and Henrique raise serious questions over Wijndal's future. Ajax have been open to selling the former AZ Alkmaar full-back for quite some time now, but no clubs are known to have shown a concrete interest in the player.
Wijndal has started every game of UEFA Conference League qualifying so far, but Caio Henrique started both Eredivisie games, first against PEC Zwolle and then against SC Heerenveen.
It is unclear whether Wijndal's game time will now be further limited following Torrents' arrival. The Spanish full-back has not played much first-team football for Barcelona, but is probably good enough to play against most teams in the Conference League.
If Wijndal does end up staying, Torrents may get game time with Jong Ajax to help him settle in, get to full match sharpness and adjust to Dutch football.
It is probably beneficial for all parties for Wijndal to leave the club in the coming weeks. Even if Torrents needs time to adapt, both Daley Blind and Baas can fill in if ever needed. The fact that Ajax felt the need to sign two players in Wijndal's position shows that they do not see a future for the player in Amsterdam.
