A penalty from Wout Weghorst meant Ajax had to settle for a point in Enschede.

Twente vs Ajax Review!More Videos

A win against FC Twente would have taken Ajax to the top of the Eredivisie table after league leaders Feyenoord suffered a 5-3 defeat to SC Heerenveen on Sunday afternoon. The Amsterdammers, however, failed to fully capitalise on Feyenoord's defeat, dropping two points in Enschede.

Ajax took the lead very early on as Tolu Arokodare scored a very good header to give Ajax a great start. Ajax looked good in the opening phase of the game. Throughout the entire game, Ajax had six shots, four of which came in the first 20 minutes.

As the game went on, Twente became more dominant and in the second half in particular, they were by far the better team. Ajax had very little control. Despite that, the Amsterdammers doubled their lead in the 66th minute after an excellent goal from Rayane Bounida, who scored shortly after coming on as a substitute.

Right after that, John van den Brom's team pulled one goal back through an own goal from Dies Janse. After that goal, Twente continued to push and eventually found an equaliser in the 95th minute, with Wout Weghorst converting a penalty to rescue a point for the Tukkers.

#1: Ajax should have been more direct in possession

FC Twente are arguably the best pressing team in the Eredivisie. No Eredivisie team has won possession back in the final third more than the Tukkers this season. They press with real intensity and go man-to-man. Their press is extremely well coached.

Dies Janse and Aaron Bouwman are both very good on the ball and are often progressive in possession, but both struggled to comfortably help Ajax play out of Twente's press.

Given the fact that Ajax have a target man in Tolu, Marc ter Stegen should have opted to play long balls to him, albeit Ter Stegen's kicking on Sunday afternoon was not the best.

#2: Ajax lacked creativity in midfield

Ajax struggled to create chances against Twente. One reason for that is that Twente made it hard for the Amsterdammers to progress the ball up the pitch through their pressing, but even when Ajax got up the pitch, they struggled to create chances regularly.

With Julian Brandt injured, Michel has used Jorthy Mokio as a No. 10, reportedly due to how good he is in the high press.

This means that Ajax played without a recognised creative midfielder against Twente. Mokio has an eye for goal but is not the most creative; neither is Yves Bissouma, who started as the No. 8. Davy Klaassen started on the right wing, coming into the half-space when Ajax had the ball, but most of Ajax's attacks went down the left side, and he therefore had very little involvement in the ball.

Bounida came off the bench and also looked promising in that position, so starting him would have been an option. Abdellah Ouazane has played there a lot for Jong Ajax and could also have started in that role. Either player would have offered Ajax that extra quality in the final third.

#3: Ajax's press has improved tactically

Ajax's press this season has been very poor. Only Willem II have won the ball back in the final third fewer times than Michel Sanchez's team this season in the Eredivisie. Ajax, in many games this season, have allowed the opposition to have an overload in build-up, and their press has also lacked intensity.

Miche has changed the press tactically in the last two games. Ajax now often look to press man-to-man. The press still is not intense enough, and the distances between Ajax players and the opposition are still sometimes too big, but from a tactical point of view, the intentions are better.

#4: Ajax missed Kehrer

Thilo Kehrer was not included in Ajax's squad against Twente, but he would have been very useful in a game like this.

Bouwan is better than Kehrer on the ball, but Ajax's build-up play was extremely poor anyway. Kehrer is an exceptional box defender and is very strong in duels. In a game like this, where Ajax are put under a lot of pressure, he can be of real value.

#5: An important goal for Bounida

Bounida has not played much yet this season as he was recovering from an injury, but he looked bright when he came on as a substitute against Twente, and his goal should give him confidence.

Michel Sanchez has said that he thinks Bounida needs to play in more central areas. Klaassen has often played on the right wing, coming into a more central area when Ajax have the ball. That is a role that could suit Bounida very well.
