Ajax have bounced back after the disappointing loss to PSV Eindhoven with a comprehensive victory against Fortuna Sittard.

Ajax secured a comprenhensive victory away from home against Fortuna Sittard.

The home side were defensively well organised and spent most of the first half defending in a deep block. It took a moment of brilliance from Julian Brandt to break the deadlock after 35 minutes. The finish from the German midfielder was extremely impressive.

Anthony Descotte levelled the score in the early stages of the second half, but Fortuna Sittard struggled to push on after that.

Around 10 minutes later, Thilo Kehrer restored Ajax's lead with his first goal in an Ajax shirt in his first start for the club. From that point on, Ajax were dominant.

Davy Klaassen made it 1-3 with a goal assisted by Kehrer. The German defender proved that he can be very influential from attacking set pieces.

Goals from Kasper Dolberg and Youri Baas followed, securing an impressive 1-5 win for Michel Sanchez's side.

#1: Ajax lack balance in the full-back positions

Against Fortuna Sittard, there were times when Ajax were in a 2-1-7 shape in possession, with both Caio Henrique and Anton Gaaei on the last line, with Amrabat, Kehrer and Youri Baas deeper.

This is an extremely attacking-minded set-up and could have left Ajax quite vulnerable on the counter-attack due to the lack of numbers in the rest defence.

There is a strong argument to be made that Lucas Rosa should be starting games for Ajax at right-back. He is a more defensive-minded profile and can stay deeper to help strengthen Ajax's rest defence and offer more balance.

There is a reason that Gaaei is playing, and that is because Steven Berghuis is starting on the right wing. The Dutchman likes to move into more central areas, and the right-back therefore needs to hold the width.

Viktor Tsyhankov likes to occupy similar areas, and it is therefore probable that Michel will continue with this set-up when the Ukrainian is playing.

Fortuna Sittard offered very little going forward, but against teams who are dangerous in transition, playing with two attacking full-backs will cause Ajax problems.

#2:Amrabat impresses

Sofyan Amrabat made his first start in an Ajax shirt today and looked quite good. His passing stood out, and particularly in the first half, he played a couple of impressive passes.

His ability to control the tempo of games, progress the ball forward and recycle possession is exactly what Ajax needed in a defensive midfielder. He will undoubtedly be a crucial player for Michel Sanchez moving forward.

#3: Edvardsen should not have started

Oliver Edvarsen started on the left wing for Ajax and had a poor game.

Edvardsen is good on the counter-attack and can make runs behind, but Danny Buijs' team were set up in a very deep block, and this game therefore did not suit Edvardsen at all.

Against teams that play a deep block, you need players with quality in small spaces, and Abdellah Ouazane has that quality. Ouazane replaced Edvarsen after 57 minutes, but the Moroccan should have started.

#4: Mokio fails to build on PSV performance

Jorthy Mokio played exceptionally in the first-half against PSV Eindhoven last week, but failed to build on that performance against Fortuna Sittard on Saturday night.

While Mokio started as the no. 6 last week, he was used as the no. 8 against Fortuna, with Amrabat as the deepest midfielder. Davy Klaassen dropped to the bench.

Mokio had a few promising actions in the early stages of the game but failed to impose himself as the game went on and offered Ajax very little throughout the game. He also missed a very good chance in the second half, which was created by an impressive pass from Berghuis.

Mokio is still very young, and inconsistency is therefore normal. He has a very high ceiling, but clearly still has a lot of development ahead of him.

#5: Worrying times for Leonardo

Expectations for Marcos Leonardo were very high following his transfer from Al Hilal in the summer, which cost Ajax just under €20 million.

The Brazilian striker constantly gets into great goal-scoring positions, but has missed several big chances.

Tolu Arokodare has been exceptional for Ajax so far this season and has scored five times in all competitions. He did not score on Saturday night, but once again played well. He is strong, wins many aerial duels, and has a good first touch, both with his feet and with his chest. He also creates chances inside the penalty box and can score goals. He has almost everything you want in a striker.

The fact that Dolberg was brought on to replace Tolu is perhaps the most worrying thing for Leonardo. Dolberg scored, but his performances in the early stages of the season have left a lot to be desired.

Leonardo has a lot of potential, but he has a lot of work to do if he wants to get to the point where he is starting games regularly.
