Kasper Dolberg has stayed at Ajax this summer, but there were two clubs very keen on signing him.
The summer transfer window has now closed, and it was a very busy one for Ajax and Jordi Cruijff.
In addition to many incomings, Ajax also parted ways with several players. One player who did stay, however, is Kasper Dolberg.
Dolberg rejoined Ajax last summer for a fee which could amount to a total of €12.5 million. However, Ajax wanted to sell the Danish striker this summer after a turbulent year in Amsterdam.
Dolberg, who scored 45 goals in three years during his first spell at Ajax, has struggled to find form since moving back to Amsterdam last summer.
Dolberg only managed five goals in 30 games in all competitions last season for Ajax and has not looked particularly convincing in the early stages of this season.
Two clubs showed interest in Dolberg
According to various reports, there was serious interest in Dolberg this summer from two clubs.
Speaking on FC Afkicken, Johan Inan reported that Lille were very interested in Kasper Dolberg, but ultimately decided to sign Ayase Ueda from Feyenoord.
FC Midtjylland were also keen on signing Dolberg.
According to Bold, Midtjylland were working hard to sign Dolberg on deadline day. Dolberg was one of Midtjylland's top priorities at the end of the summer transfer window, and negotiations with the Denmark international intensified on Wednesday.
However, the parties failed to reach an agreement.
Dolberg should have left
Ajax signed two excellent strikers, Marcos Leonardo and Tolu Arokodare, this summer.
Leonardo has had a tough start to his time in Amsterdam, but consistently gets into very good goal-scoring opportunities.
Tolu, on the other hand, has hit the ground running, having scored four goals and registered two assists in his first six appearances for the Amsterdammers.
Given the quality Ajax now have in the striker position, it is hard to envision a situation where Dolberg gets regular minutes.
It is understandable that he struggled last season given how unstable the situation at Ajax was, but in the minutes he has played so far under Michel Sanchez, he has looked poor and off the pace.
A move away from Ajax would have been beneficial for all parties involved. It would have been good for Dolberg to go to a team where he could play regular minutes and try to rediscover his best form. It would have also been good for Ajax to save money on the salary of a player who is probably not going to play much and also receive a transfer fee.
While Dolberg will stay at Ajax for now, Ajax will likely try to sell him again in January if his poor form continues.
