Newcastle United are reportedly interested in an Ajax defender.
Sean Steur left Ajax during the summer transfer window, moving to Premier League outfit Newcastle United in a deal worth up to around €27 million.
Steur had established himself as a regular first-team player for Ajax during the 2025/26 season, finishing the campaign with 25 appearances in all competitions.
So far this season, Steur has made seven appearances in all competitions for the Magpies, starting on two occasions in the Premier League.
In addition to Steur, a few other midfielders departed Ajax this summer. Branco van den Boomen moved to French club Angers, bringing an end to a turbulent time in Amsterdam. Kian Fitz-Jim also left the club, joining Serie A outfit Torino. Youri Regeer also left following a poor start to the season. He joined Werder Bremen on loan, with the Bundesliga side holding the option to sign him permanently next summer.
Those departures allowed Ajax to press ahead with their midfield rebuild. The Amsterdammers signed Julian Brandt, Sofyan Amrabat and Yves Bissouma on free transfers.
Newcastle keen on Bouwman
After signing Steur from Ajax, Newcastle are now reportedly showing interest in defender Aaron Bouwman.
According to Chronicle Live, Newcastle were keeping tabs on centre-back Aaron Bouwman before he suffered an injury last month.
Bouwman has been a name put to Newcastle, given he shares the same agency as their manager, Matthias Jaissle. Bouwman fits the bill in terms of younger stars joining Newcastle as the club looks to push forward in the coming years, the report from Chronicle Live claims.
With Fabian Schar now 34 years old, Newcastle are actively looking for a right-sided centre-back.
Bouwman should stay at Ajax
Bouwman is an extremely talented player with the potential to become one of Europe's best central defenders. That being said, he is not yet ready for a move to the Premier League and should stay at Ajax for the next two to three years.
On the ball, Bouwman is exceptional. He is good under pressure, can carry the ball forward over long distances, and can break lines with his passing.
Out of possession, however, Bouwman has vulnerabilities in his game and still makes quite a few errors, which is completely normal given the fact that he is still only 19 years of age and inexperienced.
He still only has 24 senior appearances for Ajax under his belt and should stay at the club over the next few seasons to further develop before making a big move. He has a very high ceiling, but there is no need for him to rush into a move away from Amsterdam.
