Paris Saint-Germain have reached an agreement to sign Mika Godts from Ajax.

News emerged a few weeks ago that PSG had identified Godts as a top target, with the European champions looking to strengthen their flanks. Bradley Barcola is possibly set to depart the Parc des Princes in the coming weeks, and PSG also withdrew from the race for Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, who has joined Real Madrid in a transfer worth potentially up to €140 million. 

Ajax wanted to keep Godts, with technical director Jordi Cruijff saying that he wanted the Belgian winger to stay for at least one more year. Godts' desire to move to Paris, however, meant that keeping him was always going to be difficult.

Godts was spotted with PSG's technical director, Luis Campos, in Portugal, and an initial offer from the Parisians followed quickly after.

PSG's first offer was in the region of €45 million, including bonuses, which was well under Ajax's valuation of €60 million.

The two sides have now reached a compromise. According to Fabrizio Romano, a verbal agreement is now in place between PSG and Ajax over the transfer of Godts for a total package of €55 million.

All documents need to be signed, but the deal is now verbally agreed. Godts did not play against Ajax on Thursday night against Shelbourne FC, which was an indication that a transfer was getting closer.

Godts registered 29 goal contributions last season in the Eredivisie. Replacing a player like that is never going to be easy, and his departure undoubtedly weakens Ajax. However, even without Godts, Ajax can still challenge for the Eredivisie title next season.

Godts leaves for a substantial amount of money, which Ajax can use to significantly strengthen their squad. They will sign a new left winger, with Noa Lang a top candidate to replace Godts. Ajax also want a right winger.

Ajax have also signed Marcos Leonardo and Julian Brandt, who are both exceptional players and will help Ajax replace Godts' output in terms of goals and assists. The signings of Daley Blind and Marc-André ter Stegen also add significant quality and experience to Ajax's backline.

While Godts' departure is far from ideal, Ajax's signings so far this summer mean they were not going to be as reliant on him as they were last season, and with a few weeks still left of the transfer window, Ajax still have time to get the squad to the level of an Eredivisie-winning team.
