Kenneth Perez has explained one quality Ajax's squad currently lacks.
Ajax had a busy transfer window, signing 12 new players including two wingers.
On the right wing, Ajax completed the signing of Viktor Tsygankov from Girona. The Ukrainian winger worked with current Ajax head coach Michel Sanchez during their time together at Girona and was brought in to provide competition for Steven Berghuis on the right wing after Maher Carrizo moved to FC Copenhagen on a season-long loan.
On the left wing, Ajax signed Simon Adingra on a season-long loan from Sunderland after Mika Godts departed to Paris Saint-Germain. Before signing Adingra, Ajax held talks over a deal for Noa Lang, but that transfer failed to materialise.
Adingra was injured when he signed for Ajax and only made his debut on Saturday night against NEC Nijmegen. While he is predominantly a left winger, he came on for the final 30 minutes against NEC Nijmegen and played on the right wing.
Oscar Gloukh has started for Ajax on the left wing in the majority of games so far this season, and Abdellah Ouazane has also played quite a lot there, often coming on as a substitute.
Perez explains one of Ajax's weaknesses
Speaking on ESPN's Dit was het Weekend show, Kenneth Perez said that he believes Ajax lack speed and players who can make runs in behind.
"The squad lacks something very essential that others have: speed and players who make runs in behind. They don't have that at all.
"They have the ideal striker to play around him. They are making the wrong choices because they don't have that in combination with Tolu.
"The squad is fine, more than average, but the composition isn't right. They don't have someone like PSV has in Ruben van Bommel, who can make such deep runs. That should be Adingra, but he didn't make a single run."
Adingra needs time
Adingra has received criticism for his performance against NEC Nijmegen, and while his performance on his debut was not particularly convincing, he needs to be given time.
Prior to the game against NEC Nijmegen, he had not played since 2 August, in a friendly for Sunderland against Wrexham, and had played just 53 minutes during the entirety of pre-season. He was injured and needs to be given time to find his rhythm.
He also played on the right wing, which is not the position where he is best. Against NEC Nijmegen, you could see that he was not very comfortable in that position and should therefore be used on the left.
Adingra has the ability to become one of the best attackers in the league. It was just slightly over a year ago that Sunderland paid a reported fee of over €20 million to sign Adingra from Brighton and Hove Albion.
His first few months at Sunderland did not go to plan, and he was loaned out to AS Monaco in the winter. That being said, he was very impressive during his season at Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium and showed glimpses of quality during his time at Brighton.
He needs to be given time to adapt to life in Amsterdam and find his rhythm on the pitch after a spell on the sidelines.
