Will Ajax win the Eredivisie this season?More Videos

Ajax signed 11 new first-team players during the summer transfer window, and also signed Yves Bissouma on a free transfer in September after the window had closed.

The Amsterdammers want to challenge for the Eredivisie title this season, despite finishing 28 points behind reigning champions PSV Eindhoven last season.

Ajax have earned 14 points from their first seven games this season and currently sit in 5th place, five points behind league leaders AZ Alkmaar.

After the international break, a busy end to the month awaits Ajax, with six games scheduled in the final three weeks of October.

Michel Sanchez's side returns to action on 10 October against NEC Nijmegen, then travels to Croatia to kick off their UEFA Conference League league-phase campaign against Hajduk Split. After that, Ajax face FC Groningen, Atalanta, Sparta Rotterdam and conclude the month with a home game against AZ Alkmaar.

Bosz talks about Ajax's recruitment

In an interview with De Telegraaf, PSV Eindhoven manager Peter Bosz discussed Ajax's recruitment during the summer transfer window, specifically Tolu Arokodare and Julian Brandt.

"You can see that Ajax has strengthened enormously," Bosz said.

"They have opted for experience. A number of those players are doing very well.

"They have signed a big striker, something we don't really have in the Netherlands," Bosz said, speaking on Tolu. Ajax signed the Nigerian striker on an initial loan deal from Wolverhampton Wanderers, with the option to make the deal permanent next summer.

"With Brandt, they have signed a player whom I know personally very well, who is almost made for the Dutch league. So that is a quality boost for Ajax," Bosz explained.

Following the expiry of his Borussia Dortmund contract, Brandt attracted interest from the Premier League, but ultimately decided to make the move to Amsterdam.

Ajax are genuine title contenders again

Ajax last won the Eredivisie in 2022, but faced a turbulent time following Erik ten Hag's departure to Manchester United.

During the 2024/25 season, Ajax came extremely close to winning the league title under Francesco Farioli, finishing just one point behind PSV Eindhoven. Farioli left, and Ajax dropped off significantly again last season.

However, Jordi Cruijff did an excellent job during the summer to put Ajax in a position where they can challenge for the title again. Michel is a very good manager, and while certain aspects of the system need to be improved, Ajax have been fairly entertaining to watch this season, scoring three goals on average per game in the Eredivisie.

Ajax signed numerous very experienced players in the summer, but also has an exciting group of young players who could make a real impact this season.

It remains to be seen whether Ajax will look to strengthen the squad further in the winter transfer window. Should they decide to do so, a new right-back may be on the agenda. Ajax were said to be keen on signing one in the summer, but Anton Gaaei staying meant Ajax did not push ahead with an arrival in that position.
