Joey Veerman is beginning to win over his German critics after an impressive performance for Borussia Dortmund, with several leading outlets praising the former PSV midfielder following Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Dortmund reportedly paid close to €23 million for Veerman, who has experienced mixed performances since his arrival. However, his display in midfield has drawn positive reviews from BILD, Kicker and Frankfurter Allgemeine.

SKY Deutschland praised the investment, writing: “Dortmund paid millions of euros for this playmaker who shows that that amount of money was a good investment.”

Veerman operated as the lone defensive midfielder against Frankfurt, dictating play with his passing range and composure. He won nine balls, the most of any player on the pitch, and helped create chances for Julian Ryerson’s teammate Svensson and Serhou Guirassy, both of whom struck the woodwork.

ARD/ZDF also highlighted his influence on Dortmund’s build-up, noting that he had the most touches in midfield and played an important role in organising the team.

BILD acknowledged that the Dutchman still has room to improve, while Ruhr24 praised his defensive work and precise long passing.

Kicker believes Veerman could develop into an important figure as Dortmund challenge Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga title.

The early doubts surrounding his transfer are beginning to give way to cautious optimism.
