Germany booked their place in the Round of 32 with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast in Toronto, overturning a first-half deficit through a decisive second-half intervention from substitute Deniz Undav.

Yet when the game entered its decisive phase, Undav emerged from the bench to deliver the quality that separated the teams and sent Die Mannschaft through to the knockout stages.

The match began at a frantic pace. Kai Havertz had the first sight of goal just 12 seconds after kickoff, blazing over from inside the penalty area as Germany immediately attempted to impose themselves on the game.

Germany's performance was far from the free-flowing exhibition they produced against Curacao, but in many ways it may have been more valuable.

Julian Nagelsmann's side were forced to solve problems against an organised and physically imposing opponent that refused to be overwhelmed. For long periods, Germany controlled possession without truly controlling the game, and their vulnerability in defensive transitions was exposed once again when Ivory Coast took the lead through Frank Kessie.

However, the response highlighted the growing maturity within this squad. The introductions of Nadiem Amiri and Deniz Undav changed the contest, while Felix Nmecha delivered another tireless midfield display.

Going forward, Germany must improve their defensive protection when they lose possession and find quicker solutions against compact blocks. Their creativity remains elite, but stronger opponents will punish the defensive lapses that continue to surface.

Emerse Fae's side demonstrated exactly why many viewed them as Germany's toughest group-stage challenge. The Elephants were tactically disciplined, physically competitive and consistently dangerous on the counterattack.

Yan Diomande was outstanding, repeatedly troubling Joshua Kimmich and providing the spark that led to Frank Kessie's opening goal. Amad Diallo and Bonny also played important roles in unsettling Germany's back line.

For over an hour, the Ivory Coast looked the more threatening side, despite having less of the ball. Their downfall came in the decisive moments. Simon Adingra's late missed opportunity proved costly before Undav's stoppage-time winner broke Ivorian hearts.

Nevertheless, this display reinforced that Ivory Coast possess enough quality, pace and organisation to believe qualification remains firmly within their grasp heading into the final matchday.
