"I'm not here to be the best player..." Vinicius Junior declares his only aim at FIFA World Cup 2026

Vinicius Junior has stressed that personal accolades hold little significance compared to the collective objective driving Brazil's World Cup campaign.

Speaking ahead of the Selecao's opening Group C clash against Morocco, the Real Madrid forward stressed that his focus is fixed entirely on helping Brazil reclaim football's biggest prize and end a 24-year wait for World Cup glory.

Brazil arrive in the United States carrying familiar expectations. The five-time world champions have not lifted the trophy since 2002 and have suffered quarter-final exits at each of the last two tournaments.

With Carlo Ancelotti now leading the national team, there is optimism that the current generation can finally return the Selecao to the top of world football.

For Vinicius, however, the mission extends beyond individual recognition.

"The World Cup isn't starting tomorrow; for us, it began several days ago because we're so focused on our game, our development and our preparation to hit the ground running at the World Cup," he told reporters in Brazil's pre-match press conference.

The 25-year-old has become one of the faces of Brazilian football and one of the most feared attackers in the game. Yet he insisted awards, headlines and individual distinctions are secondary concerns.

"I don't care about individual titles, I'm not here to be the MVP; I'm here to help Brazil win a sixth World Cup title."

"I'm not here to be the best player in the tournament; I'm here to help Brazil return to the top."

Those comments reflect the mindset within a Brazil squad determined to avoid repeating the disappointment of Qatar 2022. Vinicius was part of the side that suffered a painful quarter-final elimination to Croatia on penalties, a defeat that remains one of the defining moments of his international career.

Rather than dwelling on that setback, the winger believes it has strengthened the squad's mentality heading into this tournament.

"The World Cup is different from any other tournament I've played, and the last one taught me that we have to be prepared right up until the final minute of the match," he said.

"We have to do things differently… lessons learnt."

The tournament also arrives at an important stage of Vinicius' career. Unlike previous years, he enters the competition fully fit after avoiding significant injury problems throughout the season.

That continuity has allowed him to build momentum ahead of what he described as the most important occasion of his professional life.

"I've played more matches and have more experience than in the last World Cup, and I'm here to have an excellent tournament," he said.

"The World Cup is the most important and special moment of my career."

A significant factor behind Vinicius' development has been his long-standing relationship with Ancelotti. The pair enjoyed enormous success together at Real Madrid, winning two UEFA Champions League titles and multiple domestic honours.

Now reunited on the international stage, Vinicius believes the Italian coach's trust has been instrumental in helping him become one of football's most influential players.

"Playing for Ancelotti is special because he gives me the freedom to do what I do best."

"I'm not talking about only scoring goals but playing well. It doesn't matter how many goals I score; what matters is the team."

The winger also revealed one of the key messages repeatedly delivered by Ancelotti since taking charge of Brazil.

"Ancelotti always says we have to play the full 90 minutes with the utmost concentration because, in a World Cup, small details can make all the difference."

As Brazil prepare to begin their campaign against Morocco, Vinicius' message was unmistakable. Individual honours can wait. The only prize that matters is the one Brazil have spent nearly a quarter of a century trying to reclaim.
