Real Madrid, as it so often does, pulled off yet another epic comeback. The merengues trailed 3-1 in the 80th minute but ended up winning 4-3 at the Stadio Olimpico against a Roma side that dominated much of the match but failed to protect its lead.
The first 15 minutes of the match were quite gray, practically without dangerous plays for either team. It was not until the 20th minute that a Merengue defensive error with Ibrahima Konate happened, when Denzel Dumfries gave him a short pass, which was quite short, allowing Paulo Dybala to cut it without much trouble, which created a play for Roma that ended with Marten de Roon's shot from the edge of the box beating Thibaut Courtois, making it 1-0 for the locals.
In the 25th minute, while Real Madrid was being widely dominated by the Italian team, after a pass from Yan Diomande to Kylian Mbappe, which Roma defender Mario Hermoso tried to cut, but swung and missed, which left the Frenchman facing the goal, and he took a mid-range shot, which was slightly deflected off another defender, making the parabola impossible for Pierluigi Gollini, making the match 1-1.
It was around the 30th minute when Courtois spotted Marc Cucurella advancing at full speed down the left flank, so he made a long pass that was very poorly measured by Matias Soule - who was marking 'Cucu' - and the Spaniard brought it down perfectly and entered the area with the ball under control. In front of him, there was only the goalkeeper and a Roma defender. Mbappe was waiting at the penalty spot, but the fullback preferred to shoot on goal, and it grazed the post, causing the Frenchman's displeasure and a great wasted opportunity.
The first half ended with a dangerous Merengue play: Diomande cut a pass from the Italians in midfield and gave the ball to Jude Bellingham, who saw Vinicius Jr. passing by on his left, so he gave a pass to the Brazilian, but the Englishman accompanied him throughout the run down the flank. In the end, Vini returned the ball to him with a great diagonal, but Bellingham did not have the right precision. In this way, they went to the locker rooms with a partial tie.
It was only the first five minutes of the second half when Courtois made a low pass to the midfield area where Vinicius was, who wanted to do a trick and backheel the ball; however, it was not successful, and he gave the ball to Roma, who quickly started a dangerous play. They passed the ball to Donyell Malen, who, with his speed, was face to face with the Belgian. Federico Valverde wanted to cut the shot, but it was not enough, and the Italians went up 2-1.
A new doubtful play against the Merengues has happened, since after a possible push on Bellingham inside the opposing area, which was clearly not called, the Italians were able to start a counterattack that ended in the second goal on Malen's tally and the 3-1 lead of the match. This caused quite a bit of annoyance in the white club, since they believed the foul on the Englishman was a penalty, but the referee did not decide it that way, and the match became very complicated for Madrid.
The match had completely frozen; most of the action took place in midfield without dangerous plays. It was not until the last minutes of regulation time that, on two consecutive corner kicks, the two goals Madrid needed to tie the score fell. The recently entered Carlos Espi and Endrick were the ones in charge of scoring the goals, proving Mourinho right with his substitutions.
It was not until the 90th minute that the Merengue comeback arrived at the hands of Antonio Rudiger; the defender stretched his leg between two Italian defenders to shoot the ball and score the fourth and defining goal that gave the epic victory to Real Madrid. Three corner kicks in the last 10 minutes gave the team the victory in a match that turned quite dark for the Whites, but once they brought out the essence of Madrid in the Champions League and came back from an adverse score.
