Bayern Munich and Real Madrid faced each other in the second leg to decide who would advance to the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League.
The match began with a minute of silence in honor of Jose Emilio Santamaria, a historic figure for Real Madrid and Uruguay.
To everyone’s surprise, the hero of the first leg, Neuer, made a mistake in the 1st minute. Trying to come out with the ball under control, he left it to an alert Guler, who immediately took a shot from three-quarters of the pitch, tying the aggregate score and making the match more interesting than ever.
Unfortunately for Real Madrid, Bayern’s response came very quickly, specifically in the 6th minute. On a corner kick that surprisingly no Real Madrid player cleared, the ball fell to Pavlovic inside the six-yard box, and he only had to head it in, with Lunin unable to do much given how close he was.
In the 20th minute, Vinicius slipped a very dangerous ball to Mbappe, who used his speed to quickly get one-on-one with Neuer, but he hesitated, and just as he was about to shoot on goal, Laimer intercepted spectacularly to keep things in favor of the Bavarians.
The following minutes saw constant attacks from Bayern, dangerous shots on goal from Olise and Kimmich, but Lunin played the hero to keep Real Madrid’s hopes alive. However, they remained packed in to contain the German attack.
In the 29th minute, the young Guler again tied the aggregate score after an excellent free kick that beat Bayern’s wall, though it felt like Neuer was an accomplice, as he did not dive to stop the shot, instead making a somewhat curious jump and failing to reach the ball, which was not even that well placed.
As if the match were scripted, again after a few minutes of Real Madrid happiness, Bayern took the lead on a well-placed shot by Kane to Lunin’s far post. On an assist from Upamecano, the English striker left his trademark on the match and reached 50 goals for the season.
Definitely a match not for the faint of heart. After a recovery by Rudiger, Vinicius ran down the entire wing, shaking off defenders, to deliver a pass near the penalty spot to Mbappe, who only had to push it into the net to make it 4-4 on aggregate. And so ended a first half full of intensity and dangerous plays in both boxes.
The second half began quietly, with both teams focused on not giving away any advantage, more meticulous and strategic. However, Mbappe came close to giving the lead to the Merengues after a precise cross from Rudiger; he hit it on the volley, but Neuer and his trademark reflexes stopped the shot without trouble, letting German fans breathe easy.
The match became a series of mistakes from both teams. For Bayern, Luis Diaz could not take advantage of one-on-ones due to a lack of decisiveness in shooting. For Real Madrid, Vinicius could not push it into the net after a low cross, fanning on the ball and missing what would have been the lead for the Merengue club. It seemed the club was in a “goals win” phase.
When it seemed the match would go to extra time, a childish mistake by Camavinga cost him a red card, which opened up spaces for a dominant Bayern that did not waste the opportunity, and through Luis Diaz scored the 3-3. And in the last minute of the match, Olise made it 4-3 in favor of the Germans, and with that, the Bavarians earned qualification for the semifinals. Real Madrid tried, but specific mistakes cost them the tie, which at times seemed more in than out of the next round.
