Four Real Madrid academy stars shone in the Youth League final, proving they're ready to step up.
Real Madrid's academy made history again by winning the UEFA Youth League for the second time. The Merengues dominated the match but had to go to a penalty shootout to claim the title. The success had been built over 90 minutes with a squad very much worth taking note of.
Javi Navarro, Yanez, Jacobo, and Ciria were the four standouts in the final against Bruges. It is true that Cesteros emptied the tank in midfield and that Joan Martinez was reliable in defense. But the spotlight fell on other names who are beginning to knock on the first team's door.
Javi Navarro had already been the hero in the semifinals, and in the final, he did not leave his cape in the locker room. He did not have to make as many match-saving interventions as against PSG, but he came up big again in the penalty shootout. He stopped two kicks to give Real Madrid the Youth League.
The club already knows the quality he possesses, and he is destined to be Courtois' long-term successor. The fact is that he has begun to write his own story within Real Madrid in this Youth League. He will need to be kept in mind when thinking about the future he could have.
Yanez already knows what it is like to debut and record an assist with the first team, but he came down to the youth side to win the Youth League. He was important in Jacobo's goal, playing the pass before Fortea. And during the first 45 minutes, he was a real nightmare for the Bruges defense.
He had the two clearest chances of the match and came close to scoring on at least one more occasion. His ability to take on defenders was key to pinning the Belgian side back in their own half. A talent capable of unlocking matches both in the academy and the first team.
Jacobo is the top scorer of the Juvenil A side and did not miss the occasion in the Youth League final. He is a resourceful forward, as he showed with his backheel to put the Merengues ahead. A great ability that allows the team to play balls in for him to bring down and set up his teammates.
Real Madrid signed Alexis Ciria in the last winter transfer window, but he is already a key piece of the European champion. His boldness meant that Bruges could not stack players on Yanez's flank. But his physical output also pushed the team forward in the first half.
Important in the press after losing the ball, he hounded opponents exactly the way Arbeloa demands of his players. Arbeloa already knows that in Ciria, he has the type of player he loves -- one who leaves everything on the pitch. Along with the tremendous quality he has when it comes to dribbling.
