Real Madrid beat AEK Athens 3-2 in the Champions League thanks to a last-minute goal in a match that was tough for both sides.
On Wednesday, Nov. 4, AEK Athens FC and Real Madrid (2-3) faced each other in matchday 4 of the Champions League group stage, with the Spanish team winning.
The Greeks arrived at the match with a slight disadvantage after two straight losses, so Marko Nikolic's team was expected to struggle.
Real Madrid, by contrast, arrived at the Allwyn Arena with 6 wins under their belt. Vinicius Jr. returns from suspension, and we noticed the absence of Aurelien Tchouameni and Arda Guler.
The first half begins, and Mourinho chooses a 4-2-3-1. The atmosphere felt incredible; Real Madrid started slowly, like the opponent, until AEK dangerously approached the goal and Thibaut Courtois had to intervene.
The white club's pressure weighed on Kitrinomavri, but in the 12th minute they opened the scoring with a great goal from Aboubakary Koita, assisted by Luka Jovic. Real Madrid tried to regain the pace, but they looked uncomfortable.
Minutes later, Courtois made another incredible save after Mijat Gacinovic approached. In the 27th minute, a goal was disallowed for Real Madrid, but that was forgotten when Jude Bellingham sent the ball directly into the back of the net with an assist from Marc Cucurella.
The score was tied, and yellow cards started coming out. The Merengues woke up and pressed the opponent, making it difficult for them to reach Real Madrid's area. Before the first half ended, Bernardo Silva tried to score, but he achieved nothing.
In the second half, Jose Mourinho's squad dominated again, even more than in the first half. AEK's presence was almost imperceptible, but they didn't let their guard down; they stayed alert.
Both teams missed shots on goal, and in the 53rd minute the Greeks made the first change: Lovro Majer came off and forward Zine came on. With no minutes to waste, Lazaros Rota made his way in and launched a shot that didn't go in, but it encouraged his teammates to keep looking for a second goal.
Eduardo Camavinga and Rota collided; although both continued playing, the Greek showed inflammation in his left eye.
In the 67th minute, Mourinho made his first changes: Yan Diomande came off for Federico Valverde, and Silva came off for Endrick.
The game's mood shifted in the 75th minute when, surprisingly, Stavros Pilios scored the second goal with an assist from Koita, taking the lead. The fans could not believe it, and Real Madrid grew even more uncomfortable.
However, the happiness lasted only briefly, as Kylian Mbappe immediately responded with an assist from Denzel Dumfries in the 78th minute and scored the equalizer.
Real Madrid had possession for most of the remaining time, and once again both teams created chances, but neither could score to take them out of the tie.
Mourinho made the last player changes in the 80th minute and AEK was not far behind.
The match reached 90 minutes, and 4 more minutes were added. Everything seemed to end in a tight draw, but in the middle of an endurance battle, the Greeks lost the ball, and Valverde recovered it, didn't waste time, and scored a great goal.
The end of the match arrived. Real Madrid dominated by a wide margin, but AEK did a great job of making the white club suffer, earning the fans' respect.
Now, Mourinho's team will prepare for their next commitment, on Saturday, Nov. 7, against Valencia CF in La Liga.
