Camavinga apologized to fans on Instagram and ignited debate: Was it truly his fault, or the result of a buildup of mistakes?
“I take responsibility. I want to apologize to my teammates and the fans. Thank you for your support. Hala Madrid, always.” Words from Eduardo Camavinga, who, one day after being singled out for Madrid’s elimination in Munich, showed his face and posted the aforementioned message on his social media.
With these words, the midfielder takes responsibility for the red card he received and laments the harsh consequences it had for the team on the field and for a fanbase that, for many minutes, dreamed of a comeback.
Camavinga lasted 24 minutes on the field and took eight minutes to see the two yellow cards that sealed the night and the season for Real Madrid at the Allianz, following elimination from the Champions League. The French midfielder saw the first for a pull on Musiala and the second for holding the ball too long after a foul on Harry Kane.
A second yellow card and subsequent red card sparked enormous refereeing controversy, but beyond that, left Camavinga hugely singled out for the loss. Madrid was winning in Munich before the Frenchman’s red card, and after being left with one man less, Arbeloa’s team would end up losing the match and, therefore, the tie as well.
The red card generated all kinds of reactions. At Real Madrid, deep indignation. “You cannot send off a player for something like that. The referee didn’t even know he had a card, and he ruined a very beautiful, very close tie at the highest level, and there the match ended,” Arbeloa lamented.
This action by Camavinga worsened the feelings fans already had about the player, who are frustrated with his losses of possession in dangerous areas, his indiscipline, as could be seen in this last match, which is linked to the player’s lack of maturity to face important stages, since against Bayern he came on to help the midfield in a highly contested match and only got himself sent off, leaving his team with a numerical disadvantage.
When the summer transfer market arrives, we may see the culmination of this story, whether the player gets another chance to redeem himself and regain the level he had until a few seasons ago, or whether his mistakes will no longer be tolerated by the board and they will find him a place at another club.
