As Real Madrid intensifies their search for a new manager, Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Florentino Perez holds the key to appointing a former manager.
Following their defeat to Barcelona at Camp Nou, Real Madrid's faint hopes of winning La Liga this season ended for good as they now look ahead to the upcoming summer transfer window to rectify their recent mistakes.
With Los Blancos now ending two back-to-back seasons without winning a major trophy, questions are already being raised about the credibility of the club's management, as the club is not only falling apart from the outside but also, with the recent dressing room spats, the fans haven't really boded well.
The Whites seemingly hit the panic button for the first time back in January, as they sacked Xabi Alonso following their loss in the Spanish Super Cup final against Barca, a similar decision which they last took in case of Rafa Benitez back in 2016, and brought in Zinedine Zidane, who went on to win three consecutive Champions League titles during his stint at the club.
Although this time, with Alvaro Arbeloa taking charge of the Whites midway through the season, the situation has further worsened since then, as president Florentino Perez looks to hit the reset button once again, with Madrid set to replace Arbeloa after the current campaign ends.
One name that has been making the rounds in the Spanish media lately is former manager Jose Mourinho, who is currently at the helm of Portuguese side Benfica, where he is under contract until the summer of 2027.
Mourinho is now seen as a manager who can actually boss the dressing room and get it under control as quickly as possible, as huge cracks have emerged in the Madrid camp in recent months, with players looking out for their own interests rather than putting the club first.
Now according to transfer market specialist, Fabrizio Romano, Real Madrid have reportedly started advanced talks with the Portuguese manager as he talked about the situation on his YouTube channel saying, "Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid are in advanced conversations; talks are taking place, the project is being presented, the discussions are taking place, and so, the deal is on between Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid."
Romano also talked about Los Blancos president Florentino Perez's role in the negotiations, saying, "Then, my understanding, with maximum respect for those who say it depends on Mourinho, my understanding is that this depends on Florentino Perez." He added, "If Florentino Perez decides to send an official proposal to Jose Mourinho, Mourinho would be ready to take the Real Madrid job.
"Mourinho is not rejecting Real Madrid, according to my information."
This comes as a really big development going forward into the summer as Los Blancos really need someone who knows how to deal with big egos inside the changing room and Mourinho also knows the club inside out as he was at the helm of the prestigious club for three seasons where he won the league with a record breaking 100 points over a Barcelona side who where dominating Spanish football under Pep Guardiola.
Despite the obvious excitement about the former manager's return this summer, some of their current players might not like the idea of Mourinho in charge of the dressing room and could force a move away from the Bernabeu.
