Barcelona coach Hansi Flick discussed his takeaways from Sunday's loss to Real Madrid, pointing to a lack of freshness as one of the factors that kept his team from playing at full capacity.
Real Madrid's victory was somewhat surprising for the Barcelona fanbase, which was watching how their team crushed rivals matchday after matchday both in LaLiga and in the Champions League. This placed them as clear favorites to defeat their biggest rival at their home, the Camp Nou. However, a great match set up tactically by Jose Mourinho, as well as a great job of wearing down the opponent by the merengue players, culminated in the victory for the merengues.
At the end of the match, the Barça coach, Hansi Flick, attended the media to talk about his team's performance in the match. As well as the two consecutive defeats they have accumulated after the first 11 matches of the season, in which they had 11 victories, that is, a perfect pace.
"It is two defeats, and we are not happy. We are disappointed. The first half was not good; in the second, we improved after the 1-1. We lacked freshness. It is the first defeat in LaLiga. We have won nine matches in a row, and this happens. Defeats are part of this sport. We have to analyze and improve, and we will do it. It is important to react."
Later, he spoke more about Sunday's defeat against the institution's biggest rival. "I would say it has been clear that we have played against a rival of great quality, who did very well without the ball. We lacked freshness. These weeks, after the match against Betis... it has not been easy. We have to rest and respond to the defeat. And we will do it. When you lose, not everything is bad. But there is a long way to go, and these things happen. This has to make us reconsider and improve," he added.
Finally, he mentioned the lack of rest and the injuries that could have influenced the result on Sunday at the Camp Nou. "You only see the matches, but being three hours on a plane in Sevilla, returning to the hotel... then going to Paris... is a lot. But I do not want to talk about this when we lose; it is better when we win. And I do not accept excuses. I tell the truth: today we have not been fresh, and we must change this.
Injuries are things that happen: muscle injuries, knocks in the case of Eric, Jules, and Dani... You have to manage it. In the last line of four, we have been left without options, and you have to manage it. We have players at La Masia; maybe we have to call them. Maybe next week Andreas, Jules, Eric will be there... we will see how they evolve..." he concluded.
