Jose Mourinho has told Real Madrid's board that the defense must be the priority for next season, calling it the team's weakest area.
With the victory on Sunday, Florentino Perez has once again become the president of Real Madrid. During his victory speech, he confirmed Jose Mourinho as the coach who will be his ally in the rebuilding that he will carry out on the team. They have already recovered Endrick and are about to execute the buy-back clause for Nico Paz, for which they will only have to pay €9 million.
The Portuguese coach has already identified what urgently needs to be changed in the squad. And that is the defense. The team must regain that solidity in the defensive line that characterized Real Madrid years ago. It is true that the midfield also requires attention, but Mourinho thinks the team's biggest problems were near their own goal.
That is why the Portuguese's first request has been the arrival of a top-level center back and a left back capable of starting from day one. Riccardo Calafiori and Josko Gvardiol are footballers highly valued by the coach, who wants a defensive line that can adapt to different situations that may arise.
Let us remember that both players can play perfectly as left center back or left back, depending on what the coach indicates. Additionally, Calafiori has at times been deployed as a midfielder during his time at Arsenal, a position he does not completely ignore, an attribute that Mikel Arteta has used well.
Real Madrid's current defensive line includes the following names: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Raul Asencio, Alvaro Carreras, Fran Garcia, Antonio Rudiger, Dean Huijsen, Eder Militao, Ferland Mendy, and the two recent targets of Florentino during his candidacy, Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries. However, at least one of these names is expected to leave during the summer transfer window.
The addition of Konate, who had a strong end to the season with Liverpool, and Dumfries, who possesses many of the qualities Mourinho likes in a player, improves the outlook for Real Madrid's defensive line a bit, but there is still much work to be done.
The Portuguese want to continue focusing on defense and then move on to creative and offensive players, but for them to perform well, there must first be a solid foundation that transmits confidence to everyone else. Something that was far from happening during the previous season, which, between injuries and mistakes, inspired everything but confidence.
