Enrique Riquelme closed his campaign with a thank-you speech to the Real Madrid legends who backed his project, including Iker Casillas and Raúl.
Enrique Riquelme closed his round of events this Friday with a thank-you speech. Two days before the elections, which will mark the first time club members have gone to the polls since 2006. The candidate, who has been touring all of Spain, chose Alcorcon for his final meeting before the campaign closes this Saturday.
In statements to the media, Riquelme recalled the importance of this date and said, “It is very important that the club member, after 20 years, can vote. It is an effort made by many people over time.”
He also praised the four club legends who have supported his project: Vicente del Bosque, Raul Gonzalez Blanco, Fernando Hierro, and Iker Casillas. Riquelme mentioned: “I want to give thanks above all for the courage of the four legends and captains of Real Madrid. They are truly people who love and seek the best for Real Madrid and would never allow anything bad to happen to Real Madrid while they are here.”
Outside of football, Riquelme’s program has a chapter specifically focused on basketball, as he considers it an area the institution is not using as it should, despite the team’s clear history.
The proposal includes implementing a companion season ticket to increase attendance at the Movistar Arena, creating a women’s section, strengthening the team’s youth academy, and constructing a pavilion within the future Ciudad del Socio in Valdebebas.
“Basketball has made Real Madrid great for decades. We cannot treat it as a secondary section when it represents history, European prestige, and the future for many club members,” Riquelme concluded. His project also defends the team’s continuity in the EuroLeague and the recovery of historical symbols such as the Christmas Tournament.
Sunday is the key day. Will Real Madrid’s club members vote for Enrique Riquelme or Florentino Perez? It is clear that the team has had great eras during Florentino’s time; all teams around the world have rough patches, but for that to prompt a presidential election is probably an overreaction.
The most likely outcome is that Florentino will win without any problem, and this will turn out to be a filler episode in the history of Real Madrid. The vast majority of fans, players, legends, and club members are on his side, so it would take a surprise the size of the city of Madrid for Riquelme to emerge victorious. But hey, in football and in life, anything can happen. Stay tuned this Sunday.
