It has been a hard season to swallow for Real Madrid fans, and one of their legends has echoed that sentiment regarding the club's recent downfall.
Real Madrid's downfall over the last couple of years should now be examined closely to understand how a side full of superstars in almost every position can perform so poorly throughout the campaign.
Has the influx of big egos inside the dressing room cost Los Blancos their integrity? Or do they only need a new manager who can control all the recent chaos with a strong hand is the need of the hour.
The Whites' rifts inside the squad have been in the open for everyone to see for some time now, as Xabi Alonso's departure from the club back in January this year was not only a result of poor performances but also the coming together of some internal factors that didn't want Alonso to continue as the manager of the club.
Recently, the training-ground clash between Fede Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni has further dampened the club's prestige, as Valverde himself is one of the captains of Los Blancos, and this incident highlights the absence of true leaders in the squad.
The fans are now failing to recognize the club, which was known for its integrity and team spirit for so many years, even more so following the departures of some of its most influential players over the last few seasons.
Toni Kroos, the former Real Madrid midfielder, has now let out his agitation, echoing the frustrations of the fans on his podcast Einfach mal Luppen, alongside brother Toni Kroos, saying (h/t GOAL), "Two [defeats] is unacceptable. Full stop. That's Real's self-image. Everyone knows that."
Kroos also talked about the current situation at the club, saying, "The result of a long-standing negative atmosphere, both inside and outside the club—at every level."
When someone as reticent as Kroos bashes his former club, something is definitely not right, and Los Blancos will need to address these issues as fast as possible.
This comes at a time when there were recent reports of the former number eight, hopefully, rejoining the club from next season onwards in a non-playing role, with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez as the driving force in bringing the German back to the Santiago Bernabéu.
Although there hasn't been any official update yet regarding the move, Kroos' return to Madrid will definitely help the club get back on track, as the former player knows what it means to play for the Whites, having spent more than a decade at the prestigious club.
