According to recent reports in the British media, Real Madrid modern day icon, Karim Benzema, could be set for a shock move to the English Premier League
As Real Madrid fans will know by now, the summer transfer window has officially shut, and clubs will not be able to sign players from other clubs until January the 1st, when the winter transfer window officially opens.
However, in the meantime, clubs can still sign free agents, so long as that player was a free agent as of the deadline, which was on Tuesday evening. There are a number of high profile players still currently unattached, such as the likes of Jadon Sancho and Paul Pogba.
One other player currently without a club is Real Madrid legend, Karim Benzema. After two and a half years at Saudi Pro League side Al Ittihad, he made the decision to move across the league and join Al Hilal in January of this year. However, after just six months there, he departed the club on a free last month.
So, with that being done well before the deadline, Benzema is free to sign for any club he chooses, leading to plenty of speculation over his future. Will he stay in the Middle East? Will he make a move back to his home in France, perhaps a move back to La Liga, a la Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang?
Or maybe, something completely different? Well, it cannot be ruled out, as English journalist Ben Jacobs has said that the 38-year old could make a maiden move to the Premier League.
When appearing on British radio channel talkSPORT, Jacobs was asked for a list of free agents who could make a move to the Premier League, and said: "There's Karim Benzema, he's the most interesting free agent, for me. Is someone going to take a punt on him?"
It would be pretty cool to see Benzema in the Premier League, you have to say. It is one of the three top five leagues he has not played in, alongside Serie A and the Bundesliga. He could certainly do a job for a few sides.
There is the obvious link with Alvaro Arbeloa at Fulham, though that would halt the development of Gonzalo Garcia, whom they made a significant investment in. Also with Xabi Alonso at Chelsea, though they have already signed one older striker this window in Danny Welbeck from Brighton and Hove Albion.
Dani Carvajal also remains a free agent, could we see him link up with Arbeloa or Alonso maybe? It will certainly be interesting to see where both players end up, or perhaps they may even retire? Let's see.
