According to recent reports out of the Spanish press, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is not afraid to pull the trigger on Jose Mourinho, and he already has a potential replacement in mind.

In the summer, Real Madrid made the perhaps surprise decision to bring Jose Mourinho back to the club, 13 years after his first spell at the Bernabeu had ended.

Although it is clear that the Portuguese manager was world class for a number of years, his CV in the decade or so prior to rejoining the club was not the best - just one UEFA Conference League trophy since 2017, and the four most recent jobs being Tottenham Hotspur, AS Roma, Fenerbahce and Benfica. With all due respect, these are B tier clubs.

So, there was some controversy around the appointment, and people are still yet to be truly convinced. As it stands, the team sit six points behind league leaders Barcelona after nine match day of the season, and have lost both games against teams that sit in the top four of the table (Real Betis and Atletico Madrid) - the other team being the aforementioned Barcelona, and El Clasico (away from home) next weekend.

Well, it appears as if it is not just the fans who appear to not be overly content with Mourinho. Indeed not, as it is being reported by Sergio Valentin (as relayed by Spanish media outlet Sport that if things do not improve, Florentino Perez is ready to pull the trigger, despite the 63-year old being under contract until the summer of 2029.

It is also mentioned that the president has another name in mind - former long serving France national team manager, Didier Deschamps, who departed Les Blues after the World Cup, following 14 years and nearly 200 games in charge.

Would certainly be a bit of a left field appointment. In fairness, Deschamps does feel very Real Madrid. He does not care about being flashy, about being entertaining - he cares about winning and winning only. By all means necessary. At all costs.

The flipside to that is he was seen as underachieving at a lot of the tournaments he was manager of France for. Although he did win the World Cup in 2018, as well as the UEFA Nations League in 2021, for whatever that is worth, there were disappointing exits too - such as losing the Euro 2016 final at home, or bowing out of the Euro 2020 round of 16 at the hands of underdogs Switzerland.

Well, let's see. It is certainly clear that things do need to get better as soon as possible.
