On another terrible week for everyone associated with the club, another blow has been dealt with a star player set to miss the rest of the season and the World Cup

On Friday evening, Real Madrid once again dropped points in La Liga as they were held to a 1-1 draw away to Real Betis, making it yet another miserable week in another miserable season for the club.

The good news is it can't go on like this, can it? Well, in the words of Mick McCarthy, it can.

Indeed, as Spanish journalist Miguel Angel Diaz reports, Eder Militao will undergo surgery for a recent injury to his left hamstring. He states that the defender has a scar from his initial injury against Celta Vigo back in December.

Meanwhile, ESPN reports that the defender did not opt for surgery after that game, with the risk then being that the scar could open up, which it has now done.

To finish the report, Diaz mentions that, unfortunately, Militao will miss the World Cup with Brazil this summer.

So, not only a blow for Real Madrid, but on a personal level, very gutting for the player. We are now seeing quite a few stars being ruled out of the tournament this summer. Hugo Ekitike of Liverpool, Serge Gnabry of Bayern Munich, and potentially Militao's Brazilian team-mate Estevao, too.

In fact, with the season for Los Blancos all but over, fans will probably feel worse for the number 3 himself than for the club as a whole. He loses a lot more from this than the club does.

Sadly, it sort of sums up his time in the Spanish capital. Clearly, an absolutely brilliant player both technically and physically, but he is just unable to stay fit, much to Real Madrid's serious detriment on a number of occasions.

In the 21/22 and 22/23 seasons, Militao played 50 and 51 games, respectively, totaling nearly 9,000 minutes of football. However, aside from those two seasons, he has never played more than 21 games in a single season since joining from FC Porto seven years ago.

Very typical, as he played 40 games in his one season at the Portuguese giants and 35 for his boyhood club, Sao Paulo, in the 2018 season. Well, that's just how it is sometimes.

As for the rest of this season, the one good thing is that it gives Dean Huijsen the chance to show what he can do. He will now get a run of starts until the end of the season, injuries permitted. Hopefully, in a post-surgery world, we can see him partner with Militao regularly next season. Big if, but let's wait and see.
