In quite a controversial decision for a whole host of reasons, Real Madrid's La Liga clash away to Real Sociedad has been put forward by two months, making the schedule very confusing.
Having finished in the top 2 of La Liga last season, Real Madrid qualified for the Spanish Super Cup, alongside La Liga winners Barcelona, Copa del Rey winners Real Sociedad, and Copa del Rey runners up, Atletico Madrid.
The games are set to be played in Istanbul, Turkey, at the beginning of February. Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid in the first semi final is scheduled to take place on the 2nd of February at 20:00 CET, and Real Sociedad vs Real Madrid in the second semi final on the 3rd, also at 20:00.
Well, the corresponding fixtures have now been rearranged. Beforehand, Barcelona were set to host Atletico Madrid in La Liga on the weekend of the 7th of February, and likewise Sociedad against Real Madrid. However, those fixtures have to be rescheduled.
According to El Partidazo de COPE, these fixtures will now take place in early December, either the second, third or fourth of the month (Wednesday-Friday). It is worth noting that these games will now clash with the Copa del Rey, which just simply helps nobody.
What a mess. Furthermore, if Los Blancos were to get past Sociedad and get to the final, they will have two games. Two games in between the La Liga fixtures with Deportivo Alaves and Athletic Bilbao. In a week where they would have otherwise been playing a Copa del Rey game. The fixture schedule is about get absolutely hectic, particularly with UEFA Champions League games in the extended league phase format around that time.
The fact the game is being played in a country over 2,000 miles away just shows it is all about greed. It always has been. So, on top of the incredibly tight schedule you already have, and lots of games in such a short space of time, there is also the travel to and from Turkey, as well as the two hour time difference. Just shocking all round ultimately.
Well, let's see what happens. Although silverware is silverware, it wouldn't be such a terrible thing if Jose Mourinho's side lose the semi final to Real Sociedad, if it gives them more time to prepare for other games in La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League. Honestly, a complete and utter mess from everyone involved.
So, a reminder: Real Madrid will play away to Sociedad in the first midweek of December. The two teams have already met at the Bernabeu, with a 4-1 win for the team in that one.
