Spain coach Luis de la Fuente explains why he did not choose any Real Madrid players for the 2026 World Cup.
Real Madrid ended its season in the worst way, without official titles and with unnecessary drama within the roster.
Finishing second in the La Liga standings with 86 points, the club had to accept ending the season with its head down.
And while the Spanish players of Real Madrid hoped to get through this bitter moment playing for the Spanish national team in this new 2026 World Cup, sadly for them, their desire was not fulfilled.
Spain's national team coach, Luis de la Fuente, released the list of international players called up for the 2026 World Cup, and his decision left many surprised.
Just a few weeks before the tournament officially began, the Spanish coach's list caused a stir because of both those who made the cut and those who did not.
It was officially confirmed on Monday that there will be no Real Madrid players on the definitive list for the 2026 World Cup.
And to the dismay of many Real Madrid fans, the protagonist will once again be FC Barcelona, as up to eight players from that team will go, including Eric Garcia, Lamine Yamal, Ferran Torres, Joan Garcia, Cubarsi, Pedri, Gavi, and Dani Olmo.
Among the great unknowns of this decision is Real Madrid's defender, Dean Huijsen, who had been a regular on the national team but has supposedly been penalized for the bad season he had with Los Blancos.
But Huijsen is not the only one left out; other regularly selected players were left out as well, such as Dani Carvajal and Pau Torres of Aston Villa.
In the media, it seemed like a direct attack on Real Madrid's poor performance, so the Spain national team coach came out to explain his reasoning.
Luis de la Fuente, as reported by The Touchline, explained he does not look for specific players based on their club; he only looks for them if they have the opportunity to play with him.
"I don't look at whether they come from one team or another, I don't have that localist mentality that a fan might have."
Although the Madridista fan base is fired up by his decision, Luis de la Fuente remains calm. In fact, he praised and dedicated a message to one of the Real Madrid players who was not called up, Dani Carvajal.
In words collected by DAZN, the coach admitted that both Carvajal and Alvaro Morata, a forward for Como 1907, left an unforgettable legacy, a legacy with leadership and captaincy in capital letters, so he is sorry to have bet on a somewhat different but necessary renewal of the roster.
"Because of the importance they have had with us, because of the importance they continue to have and because of the importance that I hope, God willing, they will have in the future, because their cycle has not ended."
