Yan Diomande silenced critics with a masterful performance against Elche, showcasing the versatility and tactical discipline needed to justify his record-breaking price tag at Real Madrid.
Real Madrid’s summer acquisition, Ivorian winger Yan Diomande, made his second start for Los Blancos in their latest La Liga fixture against Elche, and greatly impressed both the manager and the fans with his individual brilliance on both wings. As reported by media outlet Marca, Diomande’s performance greatly impressed the manager of Real Madrid, José Mourinho. The Portuguese said after the match (per MARCA),
“He’s improving. He has a very good work ethic and intelligence because it’s not easy to play 85 minutes with a yellow card. He did a great job. I’m happy.”
Diomande, who started the game in his favoured position on the right of the pitch, had to play on the left wing later on in the game when Vinícius Júnior was subbed off. His brightest moment on the pitch came from his favoured position, from where he played the ball for Frenchman Kylian Mbappe to score the second goal for Los Blancos. The Ivorian also displayed an excellent outing on the left, but could not get another assist as Real Madrid failed to capitalise on any of his numerous crosses from the position left vacant by Vinícius’ substitution.
The pressure on Diomande to perform with immediate success is less due to him being a player for one of the biggest clubs in world football, and more a consequence of the price tag that Real Madrid had to pay to RB Leipzig to bring the young winger from Ivory Coast to their folds. Yan Diomande is Real Madrid’s most expensive signing in history, and the pressure on him to live up to the price tag is enormous. The winger, on his part, has shown glimpses of his brilliance ever since he started playing as a starter against Rayo Vallecano.
Despite being one of the brighter talents in the field in the game against Elche, it is not expected that Diomande will make his third consecutive start in the Madrid Derby, due to be played at the Metropolitano. It is expected that Moroccan star Brahim Díaz will start for Los Blancos on the occasion, given that he has been the first choice for José Mourinho to play on the right.
Yan Diomande will definitely be expected to be an integral part of the Real Madrid setup, given his enormous potential and the hefty amount that the club paid for his acquisition.
