Kylian Mbappe revealed his regret about not fully savoring his final PSG season under Luis Enrique.
In the latest episode of The Bridge, the podcast hosted by Aurelien Tchouameni, Kylian Mbappe shared his slight regret at not being able to fully enjoy his season with Luis Enrique at PSG.
Aurelien Tchouameni brought together Kylian Mbappe, Achraf Hakimi, and Malik Bentalha in the latest episode of his podcast The Bridge. An episode in which PSG inevitably came up, given the guests, and therefore, naturally, Luis Enrique.
"I started with Pochettino, who asked certain things of me, and thanks to Luis Enrique, I was able to open up my vision, I was able to see how to move on the pitch," Achraf Hakimi explained. "He made me see things I was capable of doing that I didn't know I could do before."
"Luis Enrique Gives Clear Messages"
Malik Bentalha then asked Achraf Hakimi whether Luis Enrique had truly unlocked something in the minds of the Paris players since his arrival at the club. "Immediately, from the very first day, he tells me 'three-man exit.' And I say to him: 'What, three-man exit?' He tells me: 'Achraf, tuck inside.' And I answer: 'But I'm a fullback, on the flank, I attack and defend on my side.' But afterward, I understood what he wanted. He showed me videos and things, and I said to myself: 'Oh yeah, that's good.'"
Despite his boundless energy and gesticulations on the touchline, Luis Enrique manages to get his messages across to his players perfectly, as his results since arriving in Paris have shown: "Yes, we understand everything he asks, we're used to it -- we've been with him for three years. He gives clear messages. He doesn't give you much information. He tells you 'A, B, and C' and that's it," Hakimi agreed.
Kylian Mbappe's Regret With Luis Enrique
Kylian Mbappe, who spent one season with Luis Enrique at PSG before leaving for Real Madrid, then spoke up spontaneously to address his relationship with the Spaniard: "He really says what he thinks," confirmed "Kyks," who is well placed to know, as the Movistar documentary on Luis Enrique had perfectly illustrated.
"Unfortunately, I had him in my last year at PSG, and my last year was a roller coaster, so I wasn't really able to fully enjoy it with him," Mbappe said. "The first month I wasn't there -- I was in the loft [excluded from the first-team trainings]. So I came back, and I thought, well, I've got the sword of Damocles hanging over my head, and at any moment they're going to cut my head off, so I might leave. We had a good relationship, but then I made the decision to leave, so the last three or four months I wasn't playing in the league anymore -- he only kept me for the Champions League."
Mbappe then admitted candidly: "My head was half here and half there, in Madrid. So, technically, I didn't fully enjoy it, Luis Enrique. I enjoyed it as a football admirer, with an outside eye, really tactically, because I love football. When you love football, you watch, no matter where you are. But in my situation, I wasn't able to fully enjoy it, you know. But no, he's a coach who knows the ball."
Comedian and actor Donel Jacks'man, who co-hosts the podcast, then asked whether Mbappe had felt a hint of bitterness watching PSG lift the Champions League just after his departure. "If I had left earlier and they had won, I think there would have been some resentment," Mbappe replied. "Because I would have told myself: 'Damn, I didn't see it through.' But there, I had seen it through to the end of the book. I spent seven years there, and I did everything. There was simply no more reason for me to continue. When I made the decision to leave, it was because there were no more pages left in my book."
In his new Madrid chapter, the Champions League and Ballon d'Or pages are still missing. Who knows -- perhaps Alvaro Arbeloa will help him write those new pages.
