Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior must choose between a veteran and a newcomer ahead of the PSG return leg.
After the heavy defeat suffered at PSG's ground (5-2) in the Champions League round of 16 first leg, Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior faces a dilemma regarding his goalkeeper position.
Soundly beaten at the Parc des Princes by PSG (5-2) in the Champions League round of 16 first leg, Chelsea will not have time to dwell on it.
Indeed, this Saturday, the Blues play an important Premier League match against Newcastle. The objective will be to stay in the race for the top four. But before this encounter, manager Liam Rosenior must face a delicate choice.
As reported by L'Equipe, the English coach is in full doubt regarding the goalkeeper position. A starter at the beginning of the season, Robert Sanchez saw Filip Jörgensen recently promoted as the number one goalkeeper.
But the Danish goalkeeper is coming off a difficult performance against PSG in the Champions League. Before hosting the Magpies in the league, Liam Rosenior continued his positive communication, noting that Robert Sanchez was "one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League" and praising Filip Jörgensen's performance against Aston Villa (4-1) on March 4.
"In reality, the first, aged 28, recently lost his place in the Blues' goal due to his nervousness, his lapses in concentration, and the weakness of his footwork, an area in which Rosenior is very demanding with his goalkeepers," the cited outlet explains.
However, his second goalkeeper, Jörgensen, just delivered a complicated performance at the Parc des Princes. Rosenior is now confronted with a dilemma in this position.
Either he relaunches the Spanish goalkeeper against Newcastle, "because he averages far more saves than his rival, stopping 67% of the shots he faces on average this season in all competitions according to Opta, compared to 48% for the Scandinavian," or he chooses to continue with the 23-year-old Dane "who, despite his recent blunders, remains a reference for the quality of his passing: among goalkeepers who have played at least 3 Premier League matches, it is indeed he who has the highest percentage of successful passes (82%)."
