Despite a Champions League defeat against PSG, Liverpool coach Arne Slot reveals surprising backing from fans and owners.
Clear-eyed after the 2-0 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday in the Champions League, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot acknowledged the Parisians' clear superiority.
The Liverpool manager nonetheless feels enormous support that shields him from a potential dismissal after this quarterfinal.
The only good news for Liverpool is that PSG did not kill off the suspense entirely. Luis Enrique's men only built a two-goal advantage that does not sufficiently reflect their clear dominance in this Champions League quarterfinal first leg.
That said, Slot readily admits, his team got off lightly. The Reds manager was once again impressed by the Parisians' display.
Just days after the FA Cup thrashing at the hands of Manchester City (4-0), such a poor performance could have placed the Dutchman in an ejection seat.
Indeed, some rumors are already circulating, and the name of Xabi Alonso has already been mentioned. But to his great surprise, Slot retains the confidence of supporters and the club hierarchy. "I feel a lot of support -- and not just from the owners," the Liverpool coach said. "As surprising as it may seem, I also feel the support of the fans."
"When we came out of the locker room in Paris to warm up, the supporters, after the 4-0 against Manchester City, immediately started chanting: 'We love you, Liverpool.' Then I think it is fair to say that we were outclassed for 90 minutes. We went to the away end, and they were still singing for us and applauding us. We constantly feel that support. I think the club knows what phase we are going through, but in the meantime, I feel fully supported," Slot added.
