Luis Enrique explains why he was unhappy with PSG’s second-half performance despite their 4-2 Champions League win over Manchester City.
Luis Enrique made a blunt claim after PSG's 4-2 victory over Manchester City on Wednesday, October 14, in Matchday 2 of the UEFA Champions League.
Although the Spanish coach was pleased with his team's victory, he did not overlook their poor second-half performance, even saying that Paris Saint-Germain could have lost and that he does not like going into halftime with a 3-0 lead.
After the match, when asked about his team's performance and congratulated before being asked how proud he was, Luis Enrique replied:
“To what extent? It's difficult to say because the match was made up of very different moments. I think that in the first half, we showed what we want to do as a team. Against a good team like Manchester City, we were, in my opinion, much superior, and I don't like going into halftime leading 3-0 because you think the match is won, and a match at this level is never won. We suffered a lot in the second half. They deserved to score more goals, and with a little more or less luck, we could have lost this match.”
Enrique was then asked specifically about Ousmane Dembélé's performance and what he thought of his display. The Spanish coach said:
“Ousmane is Ousmane. You journalists are the ones who speak badly about Ousmane. Ousmane is a different player, a player who enjoys playing in these kinds of matches, and I think we are a team- all the players, whoever they are on the pitch- who enjoy playing in this kind of competition.”
Luis Enrique was reminded that a match against Barcelona is approaching, an important moment for the Spanish coach. He was asked what to expect from the game, to which he replied:
“The important thing is not to be the best team right now. The important thing is to be the best team at the end of the season.”
Enrique obviously knows what he is talking about, considering that PSG has struggled during many stretches of the first halves of previous seasons, and their level has even been questioned.
However, starting in January, February, or March, something always clicks for the Parisian team, and they begin giving the rest of Europe, especially Premier League teams, a masterclass.
