PSG midfielder Fabian Ruiz faces an uncertain return. A fractured kneecap complicates his comeback.
Injured since January, Fabian Ruiz is struggling to see the light at the end of the tunnel at Paris Saint-Germain. The French capital club hopes to get its midfielder back quickly, as he is doing everything possible to return. However, the Spaniard's return date remains unknown.
Will Ruiz, 30, set foot on the pitch again this season? Well, his return date is far from certain, and the evolution of his injury is unclear. He has been sidelined since January.
Since then, the Spaniard attempted a comeback, but inflammation in his knee ligament halted the process. The former Napoli man has struggled to regain confidence and feels that the sensations needed to return are not there yet. This week, Spanish outlet AS confirmed a fracture in the kneecap.
"He is suffering from a fracture of the left kneecap. Initially, in agreement with PSG, he opted for conservative treatment, and subsequently focused on treatment with physical therapists to regenerate the tendon injury," AS journalist Andres Onrubia wrote.
Onrubia also clarified that Ruiz is not managing himself with the World Cup in mind. The midfielder wants to return to the Parc des Princes pitch as quickly as possible.
"He wants to come back as soon as possible to help PSG, but he needs to receive medical clearance. In no case is he saving himself to arrive at the World Cup in the best possible condition."
For head coach Luis Enrique, Ruiz's loss led to the successful repositioning of Warren Zaire-Emery. The young French midfielder is experiencing a renaissance this season after a more difficult 2024-25 campaign.
But the Spaniard's return is still expected before the end of the season. Enrique wants more flexibility within his squad to juggle between Ligue 1 and the Champions League, where nothing is yet secured. And for his part, Ruiz knows that if he is absent for several more months, the World Cup in the Americas could slip right through his fingers.
