PSG's dominant win against Liverpool propels French football forward, boosting their UEFA coefficient standing.
PSG is confirming its ambitions to retain its European title. And it is all of French soccer that rises with the performances of Luis Enrique's side, as was the case on Wednesday against Liverpool.
Only two French clubs remain in European competition after Monaco, Lyon, and Lille were eliminated in recent weeks, leaving Marseille and Nice on the sidelines.
Strasbourg will need to be counted on Thursday against Mainz, but in the meantime, PSG did the job Wednesday evening. Highly anticipated against Liverpool, the Parisians dominated the match comfortably and could even have won by a wider margin than the 2-0 validated at the Parc des Princes.
2-0 or more makes no difference to the UEFA coefficient, which records the French champion's victory over an English side that is going to start cursing Luis Enrique and his team. This victory allows PSG to pull away in the rankings of French clubs contributing to the national coefficient, with its contribution now 10 points higher than that of the second-placed club, Olympique Lyonnais.
In the current season's standings, PSG's victory allows France to claw back half a point on Italy, which no longer has any clubs in the Champions League but still has two in the lesser competitions, Fiorentina in the Conference League and Bologna in the Europa League. The gap to fifth place remains significant, at two points. France's current sixth-place standing in this season's coefficient rankings will now be a minimum, depending on the rest of the competition.
But PSG continues in any case to carry the UEFA coefficient, and will now have a week to prepare for next Tuesday's match against Liverpool -- the match against Lens having been rescheduled in a decision that caused considerable controversy in France.
