Expert Daniel Riolo reveals why PSG's dominant form and Liverpool's struggles point to a straightforward Champions League path.
PSG is the overwhelming favorite against Liverpool, and for several reasons laid out by Daniel Riolo on the transfer window segment of L'After Foot.
As incredible as it may seem, Paris Saint-Germain is heading into the two-legged quarterfinal against Liverpool in the Champions League with complete composure.
While not so long ago the French champions always seemed to fear clashes with big clubs -- to the point of sometimes going off the rails -- that is not the case at all ahead of the match against the Reds. It is true that last year's Parisian victory changed the game, and above all, that the two clubs are on completely opposite trajectories this season.
While Luis Enrique's side is in an upward swing, Mohamed Salah and his teammates are in free fall. For Daniel Riolo, PSG's qualification for the Champions League semifinals is nearly a foregone conclusion. The RMC journalist outlined the reasons for his strong confidence.
"Against Liverpool, you have a team full of juice because the delayed preparation worked, because the league season is over. We are no longer at all in the physical state of the two-legged tie against Monaco, which was, in hindsight, a very important turning point, because if there was going to be a disaster, it was going to be in that match. I think the team had shown a certain complacency, which doesn't happen often, and wasn't in great physical shape. Right after that, it only got better. There was no contest against Chelsea," said Daniel Riolo, who senses everything will come together this Wednesday evening at the Parc des Princes.
"It's going to be a big European night, everyone will be locked in. I get the feeling they just have to play their game, and it'll go through without too much fuss. We'll get to something serious for Paris at the semifinal stage, yes."
Daniel Riolo is not the only one who believes Paris Saint-Germain has little to fear from a Liverpool side that is now only a shadow of the reigning English champions.
Reds legend Steven Gerrard shares that view: "I think the most important thing for Liverpool above all is to qualify for next season's Champions League. So the match against Fulham in the league this weekend is just as important, if not more important, than the matches against PSG."
However, Luis Enrique knows better than anyone that soccer can sometimes hold surprises. Having been on Barcelona's bench during the remontada, the Parisian manager will make sure to pass that message along to his players.
