PSG is working on a deal for Real Madrid's 18-year-old defender Joan Martinez despite his $164M release clause, Marca reports.
LaLiga clubs often include colossal release clauses, and Real Madrid is no exception, having set a $164 million clause on its defender, Joan Martinez. According to reports, this does not prevent PSG from working on this case.
Sporting director Luis Campos has already launched maneuvers to bring Martinez, 18, to Paris Saint-Germain, according to the Spanish outlet Marca. The Spaniard has recently been informed of the European champions' interest.
But if Martinez wants to work under Luis Enrique's orders, PSG will have to find a way to bring Florentino Perez to the negotiating table. Indeed, the Real Madrid president set a $164 million release clause on the young defender when he signed the contract that ties him to the Merengue until 2029, and he will not do any favors to Nasser Al-Khelaifi.
During the recent UEFA Youth League semifinal between PSG and Real Madrid, Campos had the opportunity to monitor Martinez more closely, and he received the green light from Al-Khelaifi and Enrique to establish contact with the young Madrid player's entourage.
However, Marca notes that, financially, it will be complicated given this massive release clause. If PSG really wants Martinez, nothing can prevent them from paying the high price, and Real Madrid will be unable to oppose it.
That said, it is difficult to see the European champions falling back into the excesses of the past by overpaying for a player, no matter how promising they are. Even though Enrique has warned that he wants to bring together the best young players under the Parisian jersey, a $164 million check seems completely illusory in this case.
Marca, however, notes that on Real Madrid's side, an agreement could be negotiated with PSG. And it probably will not be necessary to wait long to learn that the Merengue will be ready to open the door for Martinez if, at the same time, PSG does the same with Vitinha. Because Madrid dreams above all of securing the Portuguese playmaker of the French club.
