The Guardian journalist Jacob Steinberg confirms PSG's interest in West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, also a target for Arsenal and Manchester United. A transfer could cost around $87M.
One man's misfortune is another man's fortune, and that will likely be the case for PSG during the next transfer window. West Ham's increasingly probable relegation is pushing Mateus Fernandes into the arms of the European champions.
Tottenham's defeat at Chelsea on Tuesday night kept West Ham's slim hopes of staying in the Premier League alive.
But barring a huge turnaround on the final matchday, the Hammers should be playing in the Championship next season, which will impose a brutal austerity drive on the London club's management.
The Guardian reports that West Ham already has a hole of nearly $120 million in its coffers even before a likely relegation, and that it will need to sell for at least that amount this summer.
The English outlet confirms that the squad will be drastically reduced during the upcoming transfer window, notably through the sale of the best players, including Fernandes. The 21-year-old Portuguese international, who arrived last summer from Southampton for $48 million, is coveted by several clubs, including PSG.
The Guardian journalist Jacob Steinberg, who closely follows West Ham's news, confirms that PSG is indeed very interested in Fernandes, who could therefore join the Portuguese armada of the French and European champions.
"West Ham should make a profit on Fernandes, the highly promising Portuguese midfielder who arrived from Southampton last summer for 38 million pounds. Fernandes is attracting interest from Arsenal, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain," Steinberg explained.
With Luis Campos at the helm, and aware that PSG has allowed several of his compatriots to explode on the world stage, the 21-year-old midfielder would not be insensitive to the interest of the French club, and his current salary of $3.8 million per year will not really be an obstacle for PSG, with a transfer estimated at nearly $87 million.
An undisputed starter since he signed for West Ham, regardless of the coach, Fernandes is considered one of the few reasons for satisfaction among the club's London supporters.
But it is now evident that if the Hammers are relegated next Sunday, the Portuguese international midfielder will leave, probably to PSG, which has made him one of its priorities.
