From Bologna hero to Manchester United doubt, Joshua Zirkzee’s future is once again in the spotlight. With Serie A giants circling and minutes hard to find, a January return to Italy could be on the cards.

Two years ago, Joshua Zirkzee was considered one of the youngest and most talented strikers in European football. He was one of Bologna’s most important players and, thanks to his qualities, performances, and goals, he helped the club qualify for the UEFA Champions League. It was a historic achievement for the Italian side, and Joshua quickly became a fan favorite.

Due to his performances during that period at Bologna, many of Europe’s top clubs became interested in securing his services. In the summer of 2024, teams such as Milan, Juventus, and Manchester United were all battling in the transfer market to sign the striker. After a long negotiation, Manchester United managed to sign the Dutch forward.

Fans were delighted with the signing and hoped they had finally found the right striker for the future, capable of bringing success back to the club. However, things have not gone as planned for the fans, the club, or the player himself. Over the past year and a half, the Dutch striker has faced several problems due to injuries, poor performances, and the general instability within the club.

This season, Joshua has seen the pitch on only a few occasions, and when he has been given opportunities, his performances have not met the expectations associated with a player of his talent. So far, Zirkzee has made 11 appearances, totaling 355 minutes, and has scored just one goal. It is also important to note that competition for places has increased this season following the arrivals of strikers such as Cunha, Mbeumo, and Šeško.

Last season, which was his first full campaign with Manchester United, the Dutch striker played 49 matches for a total of 2,256 minutes, contributing seven goals and three assists. Nevertheless, his performances in a Red Devils shirt have been disappointing, and for several weeks now, there have been growing rumors about a potential departure in January.

According to media reports, Joshua could return to Italy, a league he knows well from his time at Bologna. Two clubs in particular are showing strong interest in the Dutch striker: Roma, managed by Gasperini, and Milan, led by Allegri. Both clubs see Joshua as a perfect fit for their current projects and for the future.

Zirkzee is open to a move back to Italy, but the main issue remains negotiations with Manchester United. The Italian clubs would prefer a loan deal without an obligation to buy, or at least one with a reasonable purchase price. However, United, having paid a significant fee for Zirkzee in 2024, is keen to include a mandatory purchase clause in any agreement.

The coming weeks will be crucial for the future of the talented striker. It remains to be seen whether Manchester United will allow him to leave during the January transfer window or keep him for the remaining six months in the hope of giving him another chance.
