After Lisandro Martínez stopped Manchester City forward Erling Haaland perfectly since he hardly let him touch the ball in the Manchester derby, the defender challenged two legends of the Red Devils.
In remarks after the match, he “invited” Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes to “come to his house” and express their problems face-to-face.
Martínez's performance received praise from Butt and Scholes in their subsequent episode of "The Good, The Bad & The Football," before the former United defensive pair chose to respond to Martínez's initial response.
"For me, we were speaking as if we were lads in a bar talking," Butt began. "It's ironic."
“I think when people get so angry because someone in the media or on a podcast says 'come to my house,' it's like saying 'f--- off, grow up,'” he added, without toning down the dispute: “If you're going to get so worked up because someone says something about you and you're going to react like that, you shouldn't be at a big soccer club."
"I assure you, he's going to have that for the rest of his career at Manchester United. You'll have ups and downs. I got criticized a lot when I played at Manchester United and Newcastle, but the next week, they applaud you. Moreover, he'll have to perform in every match all the time," Butt concluded.
Meanwhile, Scholes admitted the duo could have phrased their comments about Martínez better, but echoed Butt in insisting that criticism is part of the job when you play for Manchester United.
The former midfielder revealed a prior clash with Martínez that he had initially chosen to keep private.
“We exchanged messages on Instagram a while ago,” Scholes said. “He didn't like something I said before. I normally wouldn't have told him, but he has said things, so why not?"
"He said I had completely lost his respect. As Nicky said two minutes ago, you're at Manchester United, probably the biggest club in the world. At some point, as it happened to us as players, you're going to receive criticism. You have to deal with it," he finished.
