As the winter transfer window gets closer, Manchester United are feeling the urge to bring in midfield reinforcements after strengthening their attack with the likes of Bryan Mbuemo, Benjamin Sesko, and Matheus Cunha during the past summer.
The above-mentioned players cost the Reds around £200 million, and as a result, the board is unlikely to make any hefty signings during the upcoming transfer window. But as it stands, Ruben Amorin would love to get a couple of standout players in the winter in order to stay on track with their top four goals this season.
According to reports, United have already shortlisted several players as potential signings. The midfield, in particular, has been a persistent weakness, as their top playmaker, Bruno Fernandes, has been deployed in a deeper role because of the absence of a true number six to partner Casemiro. This situation has apparently posed a significant challenge for Amorin this season.
INEOS is looking to change that during January. Elliot Anderson and Carlos Baleba have been on the Reds' radar for some time, but since the duo are unlikely to move before the summer of 2026—and United cannot wait that long—the board has instead shifted their efforts toward another proven midfielder, Ruben Neves.
According to recent reports by Fabrizio Romano (via: Stretty News), United enquired a few things with Neves' agents, but there were no talks of any formal bid regarding the Portuguese midfielder's winter move.
Neves moved to the Saudi league during the summer of 2023 after spending five years with Wolverhampton in the Premier League, while scoring 30 goals and 13 assists for the Wolves, but surprisingly, the stats have been flipped after his move to Al Hilal, as he scored 14 goals and provided 25 assists for the club since his arrival.
The 28-year-old's contract with Al Hilal is set to expire next year, and the player is unlikely to extend his agreement with the Saudi club. Although, as reported by Romano, there hasn't been any talk regarding the player's transfer, United could be on the winning side if they are able to land the experienced midfielder who has been part of the Premier League setup earlier and could form a pivotal partnership alongside his international teammate, Bruno.
